You guys in the US are so lucky. Over here when I go to a music store they only have a couple of Squiers and MIMs with fret sprout that need a setup and the staff are...not competent.

Yeah, that sounds like 97% of music retailers in Australia too.
 
I've been looking for an "affordable" 12 string to fill a couple of tonal gaps in my arsenal. While I've absolutely LOVE a Ric, the amount I'd use it just doesn't justify sinking that kind of money into one. The one that's piqued my interest is the Danelectro one that's shaped like a Mosrite, can't remember the model or name of it. Looks really cool. But the Dano's seem to be creeping up in price.

The other one that I've been looking at recently is the "Thomann-backer". Faux-Ric, but lots of decent reviews.

The Harley Benton is the one I have. It was a good way to get my feet wet with a 12, but it's definitely not a Ric. I play it almost every day though. I'm about to restring it and do an overhaul on it while the strings are off. It needs the usual fret end dressing, and the neck relief and action are awful. I have to make some modifications to the bridge in order to get it to adjust correctly. The pickups are pretty dreadful. But despite that, I do play it all the time. It kept me from thinking I needed a Rickenbacker for like a year and a half 🙂

Have you played a 12 string Ric, they are known for being a bit narrow in the Neck spacing.
The Famous guitar players usually get a custom neck from Ric made a little wider, it maybe an option now!?

I bought a 1997 360 FireGlo with OHSC for a Mate of mine around 12 years ago from the USA used and it came with this fancy Y cable for the Stereo out jacks. It was like it just came from the Manufacturer.
I came with a Couple of packets of new strings & some sort of splitter box also.
It cost $2,400 AU with shipping, $550.00 AU Import duties as it was through Fedex as USPS had a maximum length.
I think they were around $4,500 here at the time!?
When I purchased my Telecaster, I just got it sent in 2 separate packages & bolted it back together when it got here through USPS.
Cost me nothing at Customs!

Wow, that's a novel way to game the import duties. No I don't believe I've ever played ANY Rickenbacker let alone the 12 string.
I'm not going to invest "real money" in a guitar that might only see the occasional use for a part here and there.
If I can get a serviceable budget 12 string that's got some good "bones' the rest I can do to make it play and sound good.

I'm beyond impressed with Harley Benton quality, although they seem to be the butt of a lot of snob jokes on the forum. Although my experience is an example of one. :) My fretless Jazz bass is amazing quality. Only down side is that it's made with hard ash, not swamp ash. Heavy as hell.
 
The main thing you have to do with the Harley Benton to make it sound like a Rickenbacker is to Flip the strings so it is thick thin instead of traditional thin thick. That involves some nut work & maybe some saddle flipping.
I think they are the best Bang for Buck guitars around.
 
I also played a silver sky after some goading from my buddy and all I can say is YUCK! that's a lot of money for tuning key buttons that look like something from Ikea and a neck with the same finish as my MIM tele
 
Ok I did it again today. My wife pointed out that I hadn't left the house since last Monday and she said I needed to do something. She was right. Not a whole lot to report, but I did buy myself a new slide. Played a K-line truxton that was ok, a Jason isbell tele that was not, and a guild 12 string acoustic that I really enjoyed

When I think Ric 12 strings I think George Harrison and The Church. When I first tried a Ric 12 it was through a Twin Reverb and it was ok. Then I tried it through an AC30 and the clouds parted and heavenly sunshine lit the room... Still don't want one though.
