Taxes and duties on PedalPCB orders shipped to Canada...

I do believe it comes down to “who is working that day?” 😂

We've come to the same conclusion that this is the case with many orders shipped via national carriers. We've gotten chewed out before for shipments that would get tariffed and others that wouldn't to the same customer for similar orders. We aren't doing anything different, but there seems to be something inconsistent about what orders get taxed. I do believe "who is working that day" has to be a factor. The more expensive your order, the more likely it is to be taxed, but the only way to overcome the expense of putting it in the box and slapping a label on it is to order more stuff to make it worth customers while. The general trend we're noticing is that Canada (and all countries) are more closely watching and taxing what is coming in and out of the country. The other downside of national carriers is that you have no idea how long it will be in transit. Sometimes it's a week, other times three months. It's all at the mercy of multiple countries national postal systems and what route they end up using for the shipment.

Any private commercial express carrier (UPS, FedEx, DHL) is almost always going to stick you with a broker fee on a shipment. If you want a shipment to arrive quickly and reliable, this is the only way to do it.

Shipping internationally has become quite burdensome for customers and shippers in the past few years, I feel for that. For our customers in Canada we do offer a pre-paid duty option if shipped via USPS to avoid any surprise fees, but we are aware that the shipping cost is still expensive which is a serious bummer.

I really think that those are mostly random picks, but maybe yes the bigger orders are more subject to be taxed. I think you really had bad luck being picked up twice in a row. I still prefer the USPS / Canada Post option when available and I'm not in a rush because generally speaking I will save on those fees. I get paying the tax, but paying for paperwork when already paying premium fees for a delivery is wrong (yes, I'm looking at you DHL).

By the way, also in greater Montreal area.

- 1st one was in november 2022 ($ 114.86 USD) and was taxed $ 32.51 CDN
- 2nd, just today, I was informed that duty and taxes on ($ 85.51 USD) was taxed $ 26.51 CDN.

That is close to 30% of the value in CDN $ added to the cost of the orders.
Don't forget, you are not taxes 15% of the USD value, they change that value to canadian dollars (declared value is not always the paid value also) before charging the tax. From what I see here, it looks a 10$ fee is added to the tax.

In Poland I get taxed about 25% of the total order value (products + shipping) for import taxes and 23% vat.
So an 85 USD order ends up costing me 125 USD. So yes, those 15% discounts are a godsend (or shall we say a Robertsend).

Musikding carries PedalPCB and Aion but it's mostly full kits. Haven't done the math but I'll look into it. I can't imagine I'll save any money buying from them since I still have to pay at least 10 euros for shipping and Musikding gotta eat, rightfully.

The awesome community here, however, is FREE!

I'm also in Canada, and have ordered several things from Sushi Box, PedalPCB, Madbean, LMS, Aion, etc. and not had any taxes levied. The only times I've had to pay duties were on large Tayda orders for which I was forced to use FedEx instead of Thailand Post. I try to avoid using the couriers because I'm never in a rush and already paying quite enough in shipping, not to mention getting reamed by the awful exchange rate, so don't need to add duties to that if I can avoid it :ROFLMAO:

I know there is (or was) a threshold where taxes/duties kick in but I'm not sure what that value is.
Duty-free limit — CAD150.
Tax limit — CAD40

EDIT:
Dangit! — didn't hit "Post reply" again...

Since CAD isn’t pegged to USD it fluctuates as to whether a Canuck gets hit or not, at least those orders bordering USD100+, and of course for reasons indicated elsewhere in the thread.

Tax free/customs limit is 20 bucks importing into Canada ...

The duty-free limit in Canada is C$20. ...

As mentioned above, folks, the limit has been raised in 2018 from CAD20 to CAD150, however, while duty-free you may still be taxed after the new CAD40 tax limit.

I paid about C$40 tax/duties on a recent SynthBear order, and again another even more recent SynthBear order was about C$68 in tax/duties.
They were both expensive large orders, as I was taking advantage of two different sales held.
Paying the duty and tax for them was still cheaper than splitting up the order and paying multiple shipping charges.

That's really good to know, I had no idea. It's worth noting that the new C$40 tax-free/$150 duty-free limit applies only for imports from the US and Mexico. It's still the pitiful C$20 limit if it comes from any other country (like Tayda, JLCPCB etc...).

I'll happily pay the sales tax, it's what I'd pay if I bought the stuff in a local store anyway. What kills me is the couriers' various "customs clearance/processing" fees, esp. for small orders. Say, you order $30 worth of JLCPCB stuff. Add 15% sales tax (Quebec) -- fine, it's now $34.50. But then, it's maybe another $15 in courier BS fees, plus the actual shipping charges --- Suddenly your $30 order is $60.

Yes, I was remiss in not noting the Mexi-US only part of that; thanks for clarification @JTEX !

I've already moaned enough elsewhere on the forum about the BS "broker fees" of the couriers, so I'll swallow my puke and not comment further on that aspect of shitping.

Aaaaargh!

I recently ordered $8.85 worth of stuff from JLCPCB. This is below the dreaded $20 Canadian duty-free limit, so it should be tax-free AFAIC. But no! DHL adds the $16 shipping charges from China to the $8.85 worth of product and assesses tax on the total, which is now over $20, therefore taxable. How the hell is this fair? But it turns out this is how it works!!! So, I end up owing some $25 to DHL, of which $6 is the GST they collected for Canadia, and the balance is their forking brokerage fee. What a government-sanctioned racket, I tell you!

I only have myself to blame though. I was too impatient to choose postal service from JLC and wait a week or two, so I picked a courier. But I'll wish I had that extra week or two when I'm on my death bed, as George Massenburg says...

I’ve only gotten away with it using FedEx, DHL always screws me with fees.
I’m in the US but after using ShipNerd (as promoted by TGP) I quickly found out those low low prices up front were accompanied by a sudden and much higher post-delivery shipping adjustment from the likes of FedEx. It’s a f***ing racket over there!

I guess or Canada Customs hate PedalPCB... :(

Any other canadians had to pay duties/taxes on their orders recently ?
I would say I’ve had a similar experience recently. I try to keep orders around $100 and under but have recently been dinged about 25$ on each order. canada is the worst.
