Tayda order - EU Customs process

Good news!

I have talked with basically everybody at our local DHL branch and somehow managed to convince them that this would be absolutely irrational. In the end they applied some form of exception and this way I had to pay only a reasonable brokerage fee on top of tax and other import duties. Phew! They said that I'm lucky and next time a similar option will not be possible. The main lesson learned is that the multi-line entries on the attached invoice could mean a LOT of additional costs. If possible ask the seller to only include a single-line entry on the invoice. Thanks for all the tips guys! It was a great help.

However, you still should not be charged such outrageous amounts as normal practice IMO. IOW, this isn’t a matter of your being ‘lucky,’ as they put it, but their applying a more consumer-friendly tariff. I’d still pursue the alternative code option (and confirm it with DHL and Tayda in advance) to avoid getting hit again on your next order. That is, unless you’ve ordered everything you’ll ever need for future builds in this one…

Basically, what it amounts to is that DHL have to go through every line, work out what the item is, and add the correct customs code. If you have a lot of items, then a lot of work.

It’s ultimately a problem which can be solved by Tayda handling the EU tax like other larger vendors, but that’ll cost them money and complexity.

If in EU, go with someone who handles your tax. Nuff said.

Gotta be careful. At least in Germany FedEx also adds an extra charge per each additional item line on the customs form if it's above 5 or 6 lines.

I can only suggest what Fama also said, register to clear customs on packages yourself. DHL is only able to add those fees because they do the whole process for you.

5 lines are free 8€ per line after that.
I ordered 6 enclosures which should have the same hs code so I should be fine.
edit: it means that fedex should put all enclosures in one line as they are the same code according to the german customs manual.

I do it myself since in Finland as long as the total value is under 150€, I can just lump all of the contents under one customs code, so I usually pick a resistor or whatever since it's easy to find in the customs system.

I’ve restricted ordering Tayda before as I didn’t know theres option for this with Tayda/DHL. But I’m wondering which point self declariation is available and does DHL bump you with it as package arrives customs? Or is there some secret buttons to press?

If you're in Finland, in my experience they literally send you a text message with a link where you will pick if you wish to do the declaration yourself or use their service.

If you're not, I assume none of that happens because nobody else seems to be doing it? So it's possible that it's law-related where they at least don't have to ask you, or possibly don't even have to offer the option, or the "secret button" could be somewhere but it's literally hidden somewhere so they can rake in those sweet fees. I have no idea.

I don't know why you've not heard the horror-stories, but they're out there.

There is a reason I refer to that company as DHeLL.

Alas, most other shippers aren't much better if at all.

DHL is by far the worst as far as timely delivery to my location,I think they only come out here once a week. Tayda's slowest boat typically only takes a day or three longer, and if I need something in a hurry Tayda's not where I'm getting it from anyway.

Hmm lately theyve been having the item sit in pdx for a day for me even though it says delivered that day. Kind of annoying, but they still seem to beat fedex and ups seems to always be a big jump in cost

This is both disturbing and egregious.

They just admitted what they did was unreasonable but then will continue to be unreasonable in future for you or anyone else unfortunate enough to be stuck with DHeLL as the only option. They (DHeLL) should change THEIR (ITS) business practice.


This is pure GREED overcoming and consuming rational behaviour and mutually-beneficial methods of conduct — it's dehumanising.

A few disclaimers though - the 150€ thing was only once mentioned to me by phone by a person on the customs help line, I didn't bother looking it up myself, and the customs site sucks for looking up the actual items - I always just use the "resistor, metal, less than 20W" or whatever it was (might have been "not carbon"), since so far I've always needed some in the order anyway. Some capacitors are easy to find too, but I have no idea what the hell I should use for enclosures for example. I always end up using "guitar parts or accessories" for the PPCB PCB orders I think, didn't find anything about circuit boards that would fit.

I'm only an hour east of PDX but it still feels like the boonies sometimes when it comes to stuff like this. FedEx has always been great for us, but my wife worked there for many years and I did a few holiday stints and a year and a half as a full time courier, so we might be have been getting preferential treatment. I rarely see any of the former locals these days though, it's either Ground trucks or someone out of Portland now, mostly.
