The anti-GAS thread

Have your kids ever tried playing with a looper? You might get a ton of mileage out of constructing songs from your existing synth and a bunch of loops. Maybe they could challenge themselves to recreate a kraftwerk song that way and see how far they get. Keeps the focus on the skills they already have and lets them build up to something more complex and hear it back right away.

Another cheap(ish) option if you want them to get their hands on more hardware would be either a super basic sampler/sequencer (like a pocket operator though those can be frustrating) or some ancient Roland drum machine off craigslist or whatever. Cheap, limiting in a fun way, small.

I remember looking at and reading about the EDP Wasp on vse back in the day and wondering, "why is this thing so sought after"

They've got so much good stuff anymore. Behringer. I was considering getting UB-1 micro, but might get a JT Mini and an RD-6, then skip the big purchase for dad.

So I've been feeling the GAS coming on, more than usual, these past couple of weeks.

My spawn have taken to music which warms my heart. They've got enough guitar adjacent gear for obvious reasons, but they're branching out.

They recently got really into Kraftwerk (that's what they get for letting Dad fill their music players), and it really took off once I got my Behringer D set up for them and showed the basics. I've also realized how out of practice I am and no brainer things have left me.

Now I want to buy more synths…again. (And maybe more guitars)

Over the last decade I've had to sell them to pay for various things, and now I'm fighting the GAS. I want to buy every Behringer synth. Almost.

Give me reasons not to expand synthland again…
Boy did you come to the wrong place!

How to build your own analogue synth book?

Also.. 1980s:
* Gary Numan
* Yazoo
* Depeche Mode
* Yellow
...

Then you have the all important 1990s Hoover sound for all those rave tracks.

I’ve learned that I need a least a week to mellow out the GAS. I will read the manual multiple times, search forums, articles, reddit. Read customer reviews, watch videos. Usually it gets replaced with GAS’n for something else. And the cycle continues.

That seems to be enough to quell the FOMO side effect of GAS.

I put a small percentage of my salary in a separate account- that’s my gas fund. So I let that accumulate or sell something.

Part of me wants to rebuild it exactly how it was 20 years ago, but some of those aren't cloned, easily gotten (or purely analog)

SX1000
MC-202
CS10
Odyssey (early mk II with knob)
Juno-6
Matrix 6
AX60
Doepfer 8 module
SQ|80
DX7 mkII
VFX-SD
Ion
(SVC -350) 😭

In other words, some of those I don't need or are better served today. Except the SVC-350, because as cool as it is to have the vp clone, it doesn't sound as good as the rack unit.

Y'know despite having an FM synth, i never understood the Hoover sound joke, let alone what it was famously used on 🤷‍♂️

Actually, now I'm remembering, the Matrix-6 was a right piece of garbage. The thing would dump EVERYTHING making it an unplayable 3U waste of space. So no, definitely don't need to replace that lump.

well, incidentally went to Ochanomizu last week. (first work trip/conference since 2019.)
absolutely the worst thing for GAS ever.

saw so much insane, awesome and rare gear that you'd just never see on a shelf here in dickheadland.
even got to play an ESP M-II custom into a dual rec half stack just sitting there in the showroom cos their salesmen are legit champions.
ffs. i didn't need that. broke my brain. now i need to sell some guitars 🥵

...join me! JOIN ME!
Must be the Colorado vibe. Definitely recommend synth and pedals. For the kiddos, if you can swing, I highly recommend the Hydrasynth Explorer. It's not analog, but it's a super-easy interface to understand the traditional synth design, and it's portable! I have the full size and it's the center of my hardware rig.
