Ken Underwood, Marshall amp assembler said they were always running out of parts and they would substitute anything they had to get the product out the door.

EVH apparently was the recipient of a superlead with a 50k mid pot instead of the 25k. Watch as George Metropolis owner of Metropolis amps mods his 55 year old Superlead to see if it hits the nail on the head. {spoilers: he hits the nail on the head}

 
I saw something about this on a Metro amps forum post one time. I think it was Dave Friedman that had worked on Ed's amp and verified it was all stock aside from the 50k mid pot. It's interesting because increasing that mids pot value also changes the amount of signal loss in the tone stack so it's going to be pushing the long tail pair after the tone stack harder and in turn the power tube section. That explains the gainier sound of his stock amp.
