I’m overwhelmed. What an absolute trove! I mentioned to rwl that my favorite part of this hobby is learning—I tend to spend more time studying and researching than I do building. Behold a truly heroic dose of autodidactic potential in this box; a full course on a lot of the work you all and others have already put into really digging these circuits. One of the jewels for me is the Keen book. I envy some of the pcb work I see here and have been meaning to level up. I’ve had some kicad tutorials cued up in the background for too long. I’ll have to use my eldest’s computer for that stuff, but no excuses to get on the copper clad now! What a gift.
I’ve got to bust myself out for being greedy with what’s here. I’d like to keep a lot of the dupes because I anticipate real frustration with some, HA! If nothing else I expect to be a troubleshooting marksman by next time around. That’s not the only reason my contribution this year can’t possibly compare though. Let me share a blubbering sob story y’all:
[TL;DR - got robbed, need a few more days to get the bag back on the road.]
A goddamn cat burglar hit my garage under the cover of the arctic blast last week. Cleaned. Me. Out. I don’t even have the tools to board it back up. They left some stuff they must not have recognized, but they got everything obviously valuable, and a few things mostly valuable to folks like us. I hope whatever my beautiful vintage 100w G12H ends up in sounds like flubbed out, spiky dogshit. And I can always borrow tools, but I don’t foresee shelling out to replace that batch of Hammerite anytime soon. Most of the remaining contents of my bench, &c. have been swept into emptied power tool bags. Like with a broom. So it’s gonna take a little time to get a half-decent pif together. I told jswin not to have high hopes a while back, but this makes it feel worse. Nevertheless, I did have some sweet bits already set aside here in the kitchen, I just have to weed through this mess to find some stuff to add. I’ve been dreading it. Makes me want to puke just writing this shit out.
Still, you can smell the toan dripping of these washers, man. Phoooooey!!
Alright fuckers, the bag’s back on the road! I managed to muster enough neat stuff to entertain (with the help of rwl’s prior generosity.) Before I put my burglary triage bullshit to bed for you all, allow me to vent:
[TL;DR - boo-hoo, I’m in pretty good shape compared to a lot of people this month]
It seems my wife’s childhood squire practice amp has grown in renown. $60 ain’t getting that back. The vintage hifi spring reverb unit I was in the middle of modding ain’t getting replaced; if I’d gone ahead with the stupid filter caps it’d have just been a couple boards and a chassis sitting there. The worst loss is a budget digital four track containing the only recordings of me and my late brother working out some fucking brutal riffs together.
On a lighter note, if I had known THAT4301s would get so ungodly I’d have kept them in the house. And a small can of deoxit is fucking $17? What is the world coming to? I did get a break in the clouds when I found a baggie of resistors that jswin put in his PIF from last year! Badass. All in all, I’ve scraped up enough to fill most of an organizer with hardware and jellybeans, a Tupperware of vintage cool shit, and a couple breadboards I was too lazy to break down. I’ve got plenty to work with. Time to start a new pink baggy collection.
Lastly, a word to the wise - if your wife and eldest son move your indoor workbench out to the garage while you’re out of town with the younger kids, BRING THAT SHIT BACK IN!!!!!
Ok! As you have already seen, the PIF has landed! I pulled out some fun stuff:
- deadend Face Disaster. Yes, I am all about something crazy sounding with an excessive number of controls.
- figbuster!
- various trannies
- a contact microphone! This is good timing, I was just pondering an idea that can utilize this.
- black and white TOAN washers
And A BREAD BOARD! I think I’ll do something fun with this. We’re going to be making our first international trip, so this will help lighten the load.
Apologies for the delay. Also, thinking about ditching the shoe box- standard international boxes are a better deal. My plan is to grab a box tomorrow morning and tetris everything into it.
Nah. Just gotta Get on up!
Jokes aside, hope the new hip goes well. Getting the new one with Bluetooth?
Also, don't negate the ability of this group to delay this until Labor Day. Or the possibility of USPS being defunded by Musk and Co in the middle of the night.
