Tried to carve out some room for DIY Pedal videos, but alas

I've got a Youtube channel for my electronic music project, Bay Mud. Most of my videos are on the Synthstrom Deluge as, aside from guitar, it's the piece of gear I use the most, so I should have known how this poll would go. Can't fault a guy for trying to sneak some DIY (or "DiY" oops) pedals in there, can you? Good thing I like making Deluge videos too, I guess!

People don't know what they want, you have to tell them.
You are probably right! That said, anytime I do a pedal video it gets zero view compared to the synth stuff, but then again I enjoy them, so that should be enough! It's not like this channel is anything more than a fun hobby anyway

Sounds like you're basically running a synth channel, so the synth people watching don't really care much about the DIY pedal videos, and anyone interested in DIY pedal videos doesn't know how to find them. Such is Youtube, I'm afraid.

Looking up pedal DIY videos made me run for the forums instead. There wasn't any quality at all the them, just meandering talking for questions that shouldn't last more than a handful of sentences. Steadily I've been encountering useful websites that made me stop bothering trying on Youtube to find answers or get inspired.

Oh yeah, 100% this. I started the channel to take part in synth challenges like Jamuary and then got deep into the Deluge community, so it totally makes sense that's what people want. I was just being sneaky by including some DIY pedal stuff, as it could merge a few worlds for me, and so many pedal videos are the same style of playing through the same type of gear, so sometimes it's fun to show them via synths.

Just another hobby to keep me from making actual music. Ha

Yeah, I usually end up looking up the official production video it's a clone of instead, but even then it can be hard to find something inspiring. I'll probably do the odd one for fun, just to show people what a certain build sounds like in a non-standard setting

I bought the Volca Beats to have a simple drum machine that I could practice guitar with. Within months I bought the Keys. Then the Sample. They are a whole bunch of creative fun. And a gateway into styles of music I had heard, but not listened too.
Also… the Volca Beats snare mod is worth the challenging smd solder.
You should do a video of the Snare Mod.

That's about the same order as me! I did the snare mod a while back, but have been on a gear purge lately and the Beats, Bass and Sample are gone. Only have the Keys, Kick and FM left (and the FM is up for sale)

The Volca FM is what I should’ve purchased instead of the sample. Because I never use the sample. Which I bought to add “real” drum sounds to the songs/jams I like to make. I haven’t deviated from the stock sample sounds. Or added my own via connecting it to computer.

I would rather add more keyboard sounds. And I know I will get an FM for that reason. Eventually.

I just watched a few of the Bay Mud videos. Great stuff. Your description of the Volca FM being relevant, with its limitations is spot on.
And thanks for showcasing the Mattel Synsonic and Casio sk-1, of which I have both of, in a box in my Dad’s basement.

Hey thanks! Yeah, I loved the Sample as a bit of a standalone mini groovebox, but also rarely added new samples to it (though the 3rd party Pajen firmware is very fun and opens up the sequencing quite a bit).

I enjoy the FM sounds too, but have others things I use more now, so mine is up for sale/trade. I don't think we're that far away from each other actually, if you were looking for one (I'm in Hamilton!). Zero pressure

The SK-1 has become a bit of a collectible and is still fun to use. The Synsonics is a weird beast. Ha

Ya the sk-1 is becoming a legend. For the sampler I believe?

Are you the person on kijiji, selling the Chorus pedal, and the Volca?

Maybe present them as “synth video that happens to feature homemade pedal” rather than “pedal video w/ synth”?

People may have been traumatized by watching too many YouTube dad-rockers doing their bad SRV impressions ;)

Pretty heavily into synths myself. And synth forums always seem to be full of “what pedals go good with synths?” and “how do I match levels/impedance between synth and guitar fx?” type of threads.

Very fair assessment! Thanks
