Two Sticks of Derm Attempt #2 - Question Re: Capacitors

Trying my hand at building the Two Sticks Fuzz for the second time. First attempt was a disaster (bad solders made worse by trying to salvage them, etc.....I just f-cked it up six ways to Sunday), so I'm giving it another shot with a fresh PCB.

My question is regarding the 220pF capacitor called for in C2 (https://docs.pedalpcb.com/project/TwoSticksOfDerm.pdf).

Which one of these two caps should I be using in this position? Should I use this one or this one? I ordered both, but don't now which would be more appropriate. The first one I linked to seems almost too small for the application. Any advice would be appreciated.

Hey Chris, both will work, but MLCC are generally considered to be higher quality and more robust than your standard ceramic disc caps.

As long as the value of your C2 cap is 220pF (or there abouts) and is rated to at least 16v, you're ok.

Thanks for the reply. Gonna get the MLCC added to the PCB later today, throw the whole deal into my test box and hope that it works. I checked the PCB (as currently populated, minus that 220 cap) with the multimeter for continuity and everything seemed to be good, but if this project doesn't work someone is going to get a killer deal on a soldering iron and accessories on my local craigslist.

Good luck! It's a relatively simple circuit so if you need some troubleshooting help there's heaps of people here to help.

It’s a great sounding fuzz once you get it working! But if I can make a suggestion... if you want a relatively easy, great sounding fuzz that is easier to build than this, try the Ionizer. It’s a great beginner board and sounds awesome. Otherwise, the Amentum is really nice and easy too.

The amentum is next on my list. Currently sitting on my bench, waiting to be populated with parts. I'm going to try and put it into a enclosure with the Distortion 250 (with the grey box mods) in an effort to try and recreate something similar to the Quantum Mystic or Raw Heart pedal from Black Arts.

Sounds like a fun project!

Should be....gonna need to check in with the forum as far as wiring both pcbs to one power source, and ensuring the Input and Output are done correctly. I'll also have to make sure I don't fuck up the pots, as I just finished the Two Sticks today and realized that the pot is soldered on upside down, which would explain why it works in the opposite direction (left= louder/right=quieter). Off to desolder !!
