VHS Spin FV-1

Hey folks - first time/long time, etc.

I have a few loose Spin FV-1 chips that I got from pedalpcb a while back, and I'm curious: can I use them as-is? For example, if I want to use them in my VHS clone, do I need to program the specific algorithm via EEPROM, or can I just pop them on the board? Would it sound super bad?

Chip programming is a bit beyond my skill level at this point, although I'm sure it would be fun to learn. If not...anyone want a couple FV-1's at a discount? ?

Any help much appreciated, thank you!

The FV-1 IC's don't have any special programming on them, you can use them as-is, but you will need a programmed EEPROM for the VHS.

Without the EEPROM you'll have no sound at all.

The Leprechaun is an exception, you don't need an EEPROM for that one. You could also build an Arachnid and force it to run the internal programs of the FV-1.

Awesome, thanks for the quick reply! All good stuff to know. If I learned how to program the FV-1s, could I add the EEPROM for the VHS myself?

you need a programmed EEPROM for the VHS, as noted above. are you building a VHS clone on something other than the pedalpcb board? whatever it is, the board should have a spot for the 24LC32A eeprom IC. you either need to program one yourself or see if you can purchase the programmed eeprom from here.

yes! just building a VHS clone. i bought the FV-1s separate from the VHS PCB, so they only contains the stock programs at the moment. just wondering if i can add the VHS-specific program to the chip myself.

you cannot add anything to the FV-1. everything is hard coded in it. you have to use an eeprom to load in another program.

thanks zgrav, new to this whole side of things. seems above my head, but then again so did building pedals at one point. going to do more research on the forums and try to see if i can answer my own questions.

Pedalpcb sells just the eeprom by itself for several of the projects. The idea is you build something like the arachnid or Pythagoras, and you can experiment with different swappingeeprom chips since for several projects the hardware is exactly the same, just the eeprom is different (for example, arachnid=octagon=modul8=spatialist reverb, all the same build but with different eeprom).

I don’t see it listed, but if you already have the VHS pcb, you could try asking pedalpcb for the eeprom directly (otherwise the eeprom comes with purchase of the pcb).
