What are some good microphones that you guys use?

It's a pretty amazing time to be recording things, honestly. The range of options and accessibility to clones of stuff that would have otherwise been out of reach of anyone but the top tier of recording artists is astounding.

Plus the sheer volume and quality of ITB/emulation/sim options. I can plug a guitar straight into my computer and have a better recorded sound with a free vst amp sim in seconds than anything I was ever able to get in a studio 20yrs ago.

Blue mics are very good. I have about a dozen mics and it's the one that sounds the closest to my voice *in my head*. Like when I sing I hear a sound, and when I sing into the blue mic the same sound comes out. That was not my experience with SM57 and *so many* other mics than the blue.

I have now purchased some ribbon mics, but the pre-amp requirements cost as much as the mic. They are quite simply the best mic, and $1500 unless you buy from these guys who make their own, but have reviews from Orchestra leaders. Pretty awesome. However, The EnCORE 200 is a great mic - needs phantom power...

For guitar I usually double up with an SM57 and a Cascade Fathead II, works great. For bass (when I'm not running direct) I pair a Shure Beta 52a and an SM57, that does pretty well.

I was recently introduce to Aston Microphones from the UK while at NAMM and I picked up a Stealth from them which has switchable preamps for different voicings, and the "G" setting works a treat for guitar cabs. I like the "D" setting for bass. I also picked up an Element from Aston, and it works great on bass cabs.

In grad school I worked with the engineer who recorded all the orchestra/opera/recital performances. He liked to use a Neumann dual-capsule mic running M/S, but we also used AKG C414s in M/S or X/Y or ORTF. Not in spaced pair though--for that we used... SM57s.
