What's your current headache?

Moisture damage to random spots throughout the home. Humid South Georgia weather (and no dehumidifier in the crawl space) combined with our thermostat hovering around freezing temperatures in the summer has taken it's toll.

Rather than play guessing games or Whack-A-Mold I'm just having the whole thing done at once.... and getting rid of this damned carpet.

LVP throughout, no thresholds, and going to let Roombas patrol the house 24/7.

I'm really tired of dust and carpet fibers.

Current headache is finding time and motivation to repair a bunch of tractor electronic components for the farm... At least it's still frozen outside so it's not urgent... yet.

Any Mac experts on here? PM me, please.

TextEdit (not responding)

All the online advice is out of date (though I tried the suggestions). I've ditched the "plist" and all useless files associated with TextEdit, I updated the OS, several re-starts between cleaning out the plist and updating OS etc, went into the command-line to unhide hidden files...
Still TextEdit won't run.

It stopped working randomly, ie not after downloading anything nor changing settings nor updating anything...

F$%^&*g Apple can't even keep a bare-bones word processor stable, and I'm supposed to adopt its "Intelligence" shite?
Why not just open your doc in Pages?

Why not just open your doc in Pages?

I'm just used to TextEdit, I've got (had) it dialled in to how I use it, tweaked it to how I need it to be. I've been using TextEdit for decades, it's all I need/want — this is the first time it's stopped working for me. I don't need bloatware that tells me to change "your" to "you", from today's example of using Pages, when in fact "your" is correct and "you" would be incorrect. I don't need Pages' business card templates or any of the other superfluous bloat that Apple wants to foist upon me. I just need to write, text, get down the digital bones.

Also, once Pages manipulates the doc, it screws up the formatting when I open it again in TextEdit. It's been my experience that if I open my text files in Pages, then that becomes the default program to open them. Haven't had to do so for years, maybe that's changed. Doesn't matter though.

I want TextEdit to work like it should.

Like if I bought a car, I'd expect all the doors to be functional.

Car Salesman: "Well the doors don't work, but it's a good thing it's got a hatchback that works, you can get in and out of the car through the hatchback."

Using Pages or MS Word is like crawling over the seats to escape via the hatchback.

My wife wanted cheeseburgers last night. I'm always happy to cook what she requests.

While I prefer grilled chicken sandwiches, I do love a meaty cheeseburger with cold, crisp lettuce, sweet tomato, crunchy onion and pickles with the sweet salty combo of ketchup and mustard, but as of late I can't handle the grease without getting queasy and ralphing.

Maybe I should give 90/10 beef a try.

Dang @Feral Feline , I would be pretty frustrated if TextEdit wasn’t working. It makes me wonder what got screwed up.

Yeah you don’t want pages, or notes, etc. Those go one way and ditch the original file format.

Have you ever used TextMate? It’s open source, been around for 20+ years. Most importantly, it will not jack up your text or file extensions. It’s a little bit more heavy-duty and highly configurable, but the default out of the box looks quite a bit like TextEdit

Awesome schtuff, will definitely check that out! Many thanks in advance.

[EDIT]
Okay, playing around with TextMate and tried to open one of my TextEdit docs... got a bizarre list of options such as .jpg and .png so clicked on "TXT.rtf" — TextEdit tried to open and is "not responding" but its icon is now that of TextMate's (purple flower). I'm not averse to writing flowery purple-prose, but ... I can see TextMate's going to have a steeper learning curve than anticipated. 😸

Force Quit TextEdit, sent another "anonymous" message to Apple, and have a blathougnk doc to work/practice with (TextMate didn't open my old doc, but looked like it was ready to save the TextMate doc to the old-doc-as-folder.

Curiouser and curiouser...

We go for 93/7 when possible. More meat per meat.

We're using extra-lean beef in Sasha's latest batch of dogfood, mixed with chicken, and she's loving this batch.

I don't even know what y'all mean by 90/10, 93/7, 80/20 ... WTFudgesicle?

After you force quit Text Edit, reopen it while holding the shift key. This prevents it from trying to load its previous save state, which may be what's causing the problem.

You can also try trashing the application and updating your OS to a newer version, which will install a clean version of Textedit

Thanks Falco.

I had tried the Shift-key trick, before I updated the OS. When I updated the OS, admittedly didn't trash the original TextEdit program.
Tried opening it from the dock, from various points in the finder...

Will try shift trick once again. And then trash the thing and reinstall the OS...

... tried the SHIFT trick just now and this time it opened! HALLELUJAH!

THANK YOU FALCO_FEMORALIS!
