Which Zener?

I’m building the Aion version of the Dallas Rangemaster. It calls for 1N4742A but I have 1N5239B. Can I use the ones I have already? I don’t have a great understanding of the differences between them.

Your 1N5239B is a 9.1v zener.
The 1N4742A is 12v
As long as you don't plan on running over 9v, should be fine.

So if a circuit has a zener diode over 9v, that allows for protection to run the pedal at higher voltage, like 12v?

It depends on where the diode is and how it's used in the circuit.

It's usually more of a preventive measure in case the circuit is plugged into a higher voltage, not so much so you can intentionally run it on a higher voltage for extended periods of time.
