Wish I could build a Marshall Supa Fuzz with less noise...

I've built a few Marshall Supa Fuzz style pedals and they sound fantastic. Possibly my favourite fuzz. But I don't use them very often because of the noise factor.

Today I happened to plug in my favourite Supa Fuzz with my recent USA Epi Casino and it was a beautiful thing. Such a great sound. But with P90s the whole noise thing is worse than ever. I guess I'm spoilt from playing low-gain ODs which are pretty quiet.

I always use a 100µF filter cap when building these. Has anyone ever managed to build a fuzz with the same kind of FAT Tonebender sound without Ge transistors? For those who may not know the Supa Fuzz was built for Marshall by the same folks who made the original Tonebenders and the circuits were virtually identical. The Marshall version used some larger caps so has a fatter sound. Which I happen to love!

Have you tried rotating the guitar to find a quiet spot? With everything on, just mute the strings with your hand and start turning in a circle to see if you can find a quiet spot. Couldn't hurt.... I have several guitars that do this, one has P90's.

You can try adding an unconvential noise "buster" to your chain and see if it helps.

Here is the description about the pedal: Unlike conventional noise gates, the IBANEZ NB 10 Noise Buster is capable of cutting out noise not only while there is no signal flow, but during actual playing as well, thus providing far more effective noise reduction. A FREQUENCY control lets the musician eliminate noise components without impairing the envelope or sustain of the original sound. With the NB10, players are liberated from the adverse influence of stage lighting or single coil pick-ups on their music, and high gain distortion effects can be used without having to worry about noise.
