Oh boy it’s been awhile! From what I remember no there wasn’t any specific values but I do remember that the circuit did sound better with a lower gain GE in there!

Thanks I figure whatever the average hfe is of the ones I have should probably be ok. I have a 2n1302 that's around 40-50 hfe waiting to get stuffed in

That would definitely do. If I remember correctly mine had a hfe in the 40s. I still think you should experiment!
