What Was Your First Pedal/Effect?

Digging around my basement the other day and stumbled upon the first pedal I ever bought. It was a Zoom 505ii multi effect pedal and I decided to play with it for a while and was kind of impressed for how cheap and old it is. What was the first pedal you started out with?

Yes, your line 6 spider amps from back in the day count here…
early v1 small stone phaser (metal can OTAs ftw) and an original op amp muff with tone bypass. $20 each from my high school shop teacher back in the first half of the 90s.

Your shop teacher was a fool! Maybe just a stellar dude. A friend of mine bought a 60s bassman head off his orchestra teacher for like 100 bucks back in the mid 90s. Crazy.

I had a good shop teacher, too. Once he was suspicious I was high in class(he was no fool). Instead of making anything of it he said "I have a special project for you... make this smooth." as he handed me some scrap wood and sand paper.

Digitech RP-80!

First single pedal was a Boss DS-1 and a crybaby!

My mom got me an RP-80 for Christmas one year. When I moved I gave it to a friend. Just a couple months ago he found it in the closet at his grandma's house. It's a total trip to be messing with it again after all these years. I forgot how fun and hilarious the YA YA talkbox/envelope filter setting was.

And thus started your EUB build…. I did not appreciate shop class enough while in high school, but damn have I used what I did retain

First pedal I ever used and owned was a Boss SD1 I bought around 1997 (second hand for basically 25 euros - we had Lire in Italy and it was around 50000). I still own it and got it Analogman modded a few years ago. I always loved it and I actually kinda miss the stock SD1… next I bought an ME6 or something like that which sounded just awful :) and a zoom delay (505?) which was also not great.

My first was a DS-1 that I got for free when I bought my first bass. I still have it but never used it really ever.

I'd say that th BDDI was the first pedal I bought and used.

When I first started playing electric it took me six months or so to realize the guy at the shop I was going to was steering me to the stuff he needed to get rid of, which he could of course make sound like a guitar god
I had that same experience! I ended up buying an ART rack mounted stereo guitar amp that had a tube pre and solid state power amp. It did not sound great and the onboard digital effects were crap. I ended up selling it to some kid a couple years later.

Can't remember whether the Crybaby or the BMP came first. I still have the wah, but I sold the BMP a few years back to fund other gear purchases. Sometimes I regret the sale, but mostly I don't, as I don't use or enjoy fuzz that much. It was a late 90s Black Russian, in a cool wooden crate, which it rarely came out of if I'm honest. Still, it was a cool pedal in terms of its unusual and unique construction. I'd wanted a green one like the older kids I'd seen, but this was all the music store had. Pre-internet, there were limitations in what you could get your hands on in my neck of the woods.
