Getting weak.......for gold....again.....

I got a buddy obsessed with buying the same guitars his heroes play, taking them to their concerts and getting them signed, haven't caught up with him in a while but he was in the 60-guitars range not to mention the guitars he actually plays, he got Johnny Winter's signature on his Firebird a year or two before he passed.

My old guitar teacher had 200. He was a swinging bachelor and lived in house about 2,000 sq ft give or take a couple hundred. He had a couple rooms where they were just stacked to the point entry was impossible in addition to being displayed in every corner of the house.

My wife's grandfather had a friend like that. He promised he'd take me to Larry's house for years but I wasn't ready for what we found we finally went round. He had two rooms full of guitar cases and a 'live room' where he'd sit and play them through an old Magnatone amp. He kept pulling out old Martins, gretches, 60s epiphones, gibsons and fenders. By the time I was really getting into a guitar he'd pop back in with another insane one and say "here try this one".

I could have spent weeks there just going through them all. The one which spoke to me the most was a 63 Epiphone Casino and a mono wired ES345 was a close second.

Man, I always wondered hey guys managed to do that.

Idk... I'm a bit of an autograph collector, and it's been extremely difficult in the past just to bring a 13" snare head to concerts in hopes of getting them signed, and even still I only have like a 30% success rate if even

I took a prs to a talk Paul Smith was doing to get signed but I can't imagine carrying a guitar to a show. Carrying it round all night would be an absolute pain.
I was one of those guys. Except it was easy for me because my apartment was a couple blocks away from where he was giving a talk.

He was giving a talk at Maryland Institute College of Art; the school was created business program aimed at monetizing art.

My girlfriend at the time was taking graphic design courses and brought me there because I build myself.

It was a bit of a cringeworthy experience. Instead of students, the audience was populated by middle aged men (presumably lawyers) wearing Ed Hardy and Tommy Bahama shirts whose sole intent for being there was to fluff his nuts and bash Gibson.

When I mentioned I was a fan and built guitars he got pretty edgy with me in his demeanor. He was still gracious enough to sign my guitar.

For the record, Joe Knaggs has a much better personality and is much kinder.

Somedays I wonder if I shouldn't have gone down the "swinging bachelor" route...... :p

Wow. That wasn't my experience at all and I've been to two of those talks now. The first one was in guitarguitar in Birmingham and Bernie Marsden was there to play a few tunes. He was really engaging and funny, the crowd asked some good questions and were a pretty decent mix of ages.

The second one was down at Peach guitars and he spent some time pulling different guitars off the wall (not just prs) and explaining what he looks for when testing guitars at the prs factory and when he's shopping himself. There was no ragging on other brands at either event.

Both talks he hung around after chatting to people who stayed on, Bernie Marsden was actually pretty funny.

I also know a guitar builder who attended one and when Paul found out he had one of his guitars with him he asked to see it and spent some time going over techniques, material choices, finishing etc.

Anyone I know whose met him have always said he's happy to chat about other brands and not just his own. It's weird that your experience was so different, off night I suppose.

I covered mine in envirotex so it doesn't rub off through playing.

It was a weird experience. The event wasn't a guitar workshop but a commencement for a program meant to teach art students business concepts with the aim of giving them the tools to make their art profitable.

It could have been a very interesting conversation about art, design, market research, etc. But the few students that were there were outnumbered by mid aged fanboys whose questions and commentary derailed the entire thing.

Maybe that's why he was grumpy? My then girlfriend certainly didn't bring me there because I was interested in the program.

That does sound like it could have been an interesting night. I wouldn't have liked to be at an event with the guys you described either.

Yah, we're dealing with a self inflicted problem called Joe Bi.....(ooops, almost broke my own rule of no politics or religion..... :ROFLMAO: )
This is a very good looking group of people here. Could I just go around so I know who the hell I'm talking to... self inflicted problems this guy said. The people that are friends of mine that called to say, Donald, the new guy is a bigly mistake! I had the most successful presidency in the world and I won the last election. I believe people like sex a lot. By the way,I said, they would have never won it if not for dead people.I won the previous election too by the most votes ever in history. But I will say, I almost broke my rules about politics and religion. I love the Mexican and Chinese people, and they love me, especially the rich ones who buy my apartments or stay at my hotels or play on my golf courses.

Could we please not start down this path

But then, what do you do with it during the show?
Well that’s part of the problem.

Generally if it’s a general admission show, I get there super early so I can chill against the barricade, and it has the added benefit of being able to stow my stuff in front of the barricade so it doesn’t get wrecked by the pit. With seated shows, I just keep it on my lap or under my seat.
It’s honestly nowhere as annoying as when they’re selling posters at a show but they don’t have protective cardboard tubes to roll them into.
