Good bye vintage tube amp…

Honestly, I've sold a ton of stuff that later I've regretted but these days who needs a 100w amp? I'm letting my old Marshall go. They sound killer but you need the space to play them or spend the money on a Torpedo or OxBox. I have a little 20w Peavey 6505 that I adore and is one of the best purchases I've made for live stuff.

I have a 1970 super reverb collecting dust because it's too loud. Thinking of selling it but I know I won't be able to get another one easily

Anyway this doesn't help you but I feel you
I hear ya. West’s are next to impossible to buy because there are not that many of them out there and dudes like me sit on them for decades. I feel great about the choice to let it go. I literally play it maybe twice a year. It just sits and looks cool, but how much is that really worth at the end of the day. I’d rather put the cash into a new Supro or other smaller amp that I can use. And know that someone out there is going to buy this thing and be crazy stoked.
Just the look on the amp tech’s face at the shop when he plugged in a Gibson with p90s and turned it up to four and the whole show room was resonating and shaking was worth the price of admission.

BIG truth. Nothing will ever replace them but it’s the once or twice a year thingthat becomes an issue.

The amp I use most these days is my homebrew 5E3 Deluxe. I based it on a Clark Beaufort a friend showed me. Even though it breaks up relatively easily it is still loud enough to be my "clean pedal platform" amp. To think I used to use a Twin Reverb for gigs...

I sold my West today. 1970s all tube 100watts of the cleanest damn sound ever. It was the inspiration for my tube pedal builds. A local shop offered a reasonable $ for it and since I never play it it’s going to find a new home now. View attachment 52231

So did it sell yet? Bet it's gone soon!!!!!

I have a number of amps I've made, but find myself using my Hiwatt DR504 clone the most. It sounds the same from .01 to about 90. After that the speakers start breaking up, the amp is clean all the way.

One of the 5E3's I made, I decided to use Hiwatt style tag boards (home made) instead of Fender style. I wanted to see which was easier. Hiwatt style is DEFINITELY NOT easier than Fender style. It was a PITA.

Eh, tubes are overrated anyway.

Seriously though, that West looks delicious. 100W 2x12 combo probably weighs as much as my first car, and probably just as loud!
One of the reasons I was happy with letting it go.

The old Dynaco output and power transformers were 20+ lbs each I believe. The jensens had the huge bell magnets and the wood used in for the cab was crazy thick. Plus the chassis itself was like 1/4 thick tank steel lol. I think it was 70lbs ish…..

Sounds about right, may have even been more than that. During my days as a tech I became the local "I can fix your SVT" guy, so I regularly had SVT heads come in. A modern SVT Classic head weighs 80 lbs. I weighed one. My wife regularly had to help me carry them into the house from the car. That's when I decided 30W was plenty in a tube amp.

Those are 300W so a 100W would probably use slightly smaller transformers, but add in 2x12 big bell magnet speakers and a bigger cabinet and I expect it would more than make up for it.
