There is a youtube video about Captain Anderton failing to disclose he is a partner/ shareholder with Victory Amps from its incarnation.
They definately pump the Brand on the Videos, now you know why!

Oof, I guess that's bad. To be fair, the Andertons channel is obviously trying to sell you stuff in every video (well, most Youtubers are paid to sell stuff, Andertons is a literal store), so I don't consider it quite that bad. I guess he could be more open about it, but still. I don't think anyone thought they don't get money if someone buys a Victory amp from Andertons due to their videos.

Ya I'm not sure what the outrage is. Did he actually break some law about advertising or are people just upset? I don't see any conflict of interest here. He is a music store owner selling music store products. He has had stakes in other products he sells on the show as well as selling products he has no stake in.

Some countries have consumer rights for their citizens. Things like needing to disclose when you have a financial interest in a product when you are presenting yourself as a neutral comparison against competitors. They're generally good things and help ensure your freedom from being manipulated.

Lee got caught in the lie, then did damage control by "coming clean" and downplaying it. I'm not saying it's a huge deal, but it was misleading at a minimum.

Nobody is saying Andertons isn't there to sell product, that's for sure. They would have sold any of the amps in comparisons, but Lee has a vested interest in a certain brand which wasn't disclosed.

Maybe it's just me but I always just sorta assumed that was the case. When you are just about the only ones I see pushing content for the amps and when you have signature amps and when you are friends with seemingly everyone involved with them...

And... If I buy the amp because it's marketed by them and not just for the sound of the amp... Shame on me? I'd be interested but I've not seen one in the wild this sid of the pond.

It wasn't much of a secret IMO.

I think people watching that YouTube channel is worse than Lee anderton not saying he was financially involved in Victory
Ehh, I enjoy their pedal related content quite a bit tbh.

It sometimes feels a bit weird to me how people on this forum seem to hate... every music related youtuber? And most pedal builders.

Personally I hate very few people. Like 3 music related youtubers total I think. KDH is one of the three though, that's a weird coincidence.

Edit: Come to think of it, I'll revise that to 4.

I stopped paying attention to YouTubers about 2 years ago. I don’t hate any of them, but I do find them almost universally irritating.

Builders around here, Madbean and a couple of other spots are rad. I have nothing but love in my heart for ya’ll.

I do get tired of the marketing and absolute nonsense that comes out of most commercial pedal operations though. I am constantly muttering, “oh fuck off” when I see new pedals coming out. 😂

The problem with YouTube “reviews” is that if you see a professional looking review, there’s a big chance that it’s a payed review, or the channel will try to be as positive as possible because, if you’re part of an industry, you don’t want to piss off brands.

And the non professionally made ones are normally pretty poor.

At the end of the day, it’s the sponsors the ones who pay the bills for the youtubers, not the people viewing the video, so the platform is just one big promotional channel for brands.

And the rest of social media is no different. Everybody is trying to sell you something. And the platform is just profiling you to try to make that advertising more accurate.

People shouldn’t look to social media for advice, specially if they want to decide on a purchase. But I think nothing’s going to change. It is what it is.
