Free Universal Audio LA-2A plug in until the end of October!

I think I opted to pass on some other free plugins because the ilok was too cumbersome
It's annoying, but it's not awful once you do it. I upgraded to the latest version of Cubase (my old version could only handle 32-bit VST) a couple years ago and the only option for license was ilok. I opted for a physical ilok, and it's actually been nice as my main computer died so all I had to do was install Cubase on the new one and pop in the ilok USB and good to go.

I grabbed that compressor yesterday, checking it out this weekend. I've downloaded a few plugins and most have been pretty great. The one thing I hate though is having to download all of these extra programs to facilitate downloading and installing the plugins you want. I miss the days of just clicking a link and getting a download. Now you have to download a program just to download another damn program.

You have 4 options:
1) DAW-native plugins only
2) standalone plugs that will brick sessions if you ever upgrade them
3) 3rd party plugin managers that handle upgrades on the backend and will keep your sessions compatible (until there's a conflict between the plugin manager and your OS)
4) hardware

I have a dinky UAD interface and I use their stuff for tracking at home (printed to the disk), but I'm slowly realising that option 1 (with a bit of option 4) is probably the path of least resistance for me. How many compressors do I need, anyway.

I'm usually an "option 1" kinda guy for any apps I use. It just makes transferring projects and formatting easier/possible.
I've been using the 1176 js comp built into Reaper for a couple years now and it works a treat for the fast FET sound. I've really been wanting to try an LA-2A but between the price tag and the extra apps needed to use just the one plug in I always decided against it. I almost broke down and bought it last year but decided to just practice more with the stuff I've got. Give it to me for free?....ok, twist my arm and send me 10,000 emails a day.
I've really been enjoying using this LA2A on some older projects for comparisons! Very musical and tweakable. I just hope the iLok and UA app don't cause me the usual headaches that drove me to stock plugs to begin with.

To be clear, I agree with you. Happy to set an email filter and get that comp!

If you've not messed around with the Analog Obsession stuff, it's worth a spin: https://www.patreon.com/analogobsession/posts

It's a donation/patreon/guiltware model but everything is free and unlimited should you choose to go that route. It's all standalone plugs, so no manager software. The designer is pretty good about bug fixes and updating everything from time-to-time (everything is compatible with current macs for example), but again that means anytime you update a plugin you will bork every instance of that plugin that you're using in sessions/projects.

It might not be quite as slavishly accurate as the UAD/etc stuff, but they're really solid plugins and I use them all the time.

You can also take a look at airwindows stuff, but that's a whole other real of niche weirdness.
