Hi everyone!
So this is my build of the amazing Wise Ass Sheep! Its a pretty kickass overdrive. I believe its based on a Japanese overdrive circuit that for the life of me i cant remember! That's not what's important here, I think the performance and actual circuit sound is what does....When i tell you this is probably one of my most favored overdrive pedal ever...I mean it. I've built a lot of ODs... The pedal takes whatever guitar or amp you throw at it and makes them work together in this defined almost Marshall way. A sound that I absolutely LOVE. Your first experiences with the TONE knob might leave an impression of subtlety but playing more with it left me realizing that it wants to stay within a "limit" and allows you to more steadily dial in a perfect tone...does that make sense?
The TOOB is something special, I haven't looked at the schematic but just from hearing it, it sounds like its blending another gain stage in the first. This knob from one extreme to the other will dramatically change the dynamics of the pronounced distortion. You will have fun here no doubt about it. There is no bad setting here at all. Although not a feature, you get a sense of refinement playing with the range of the TOOB pot.
GAIN behaves beautifully, there's a steady climb in gain structure as you turn the pot. There are no big "jumps" or weird things happening here just a smooth transition to more awesomeness. At maximum the pedal still clearly articulates the notes being played...well done @szukalski...well done. For a board that is so readily available there is no reason to not build it.
Which leads me to my next point, the symmetry and ease of construction makes this a fun build alone. It challenges you to be accurate and even with your component placement. Anything leaning to one side or the other and your going to see it! A great way to see how your skills have stacked up from your previous build! Again not reason to not build it! Thank you @szukalski for your need to be neat!!!!! Something I hope to fix with my next board!
As for the enclosure Its a new design that i think i will be building from now on. At the last minute i decided to brush ferric chloride over the entirety of the enclosure. I also got in imitation gold for the print and wanted to experiment. The entire enclosure was a giant experiment and i like the way it came out. Any cool thoughts that could've made it better? Let me know! There's some unevenness here and there. This was my first time making this style and although its similar to my last design there are things that i know i could've done better to get a more accurate fitting but i think its not too bad.
Thank you for reading,
Steve
