🔥 SG fever! 🔥

Just grabbed this '73 a couple weeks ago and really loving it so far.
All stock except strap buttons.
No neck dive.
Original Tarback pickups which may be getting changed soon, they're kinda weird.
Ebony board with real MOP inlays.
Has that delightfully offensive "smell" of something old.
But the case is living in the garage!

You might already know, but the tar back pickup wires are stupid easy to break. How do they sound?

Thank you for reminding me that I had forgotten. Now that you say so, I do remember seeing some video about that. I'll research and proceed with caution...

Sounds are alright with the Tarbacks.
Great cleans that are bold and chimy, nice jazzy tones, somewhat hi-fi sounding cleans sometimes but very nice.
With dirt they kinda suck. Dark, somewhat muffled or muddy. Low output. Weird grind to the distortion.
However, using something like a Kliché Clean Boost with the tone knob turned up high, that balances it out. Pretty cool and totally usable.
I know another problem as far as pickup brightness, is there's more than likely 300k pots in it. But those will probably stay.

I did just score a Tim Shaw today for $40 bucks so I'm gonna try that one out in the bridge first.
And I got a vintage T-top coming in the mail maybe for the neck. Trying to keep it close to period correct on this one.

Edit: My Tarbacks are fine thankfully, single conductor braided wire. I know what you mean though, there's other tar-backed Bill Lawrence pickups with very delicate wires like on the L6.

Other Edit: The Tim Shaw ended up being another T-top when I opened it up. Still awesome though since I'll have a pair now.

Anybody seen the Epi Traditional Pro SGs on sale right now for $329? Are they any good? I like the gold one:

Very nice. I have an Am Pro Tele with some Tim Shaws. Really great pickups.

buying one tomorrow off ye olde fb marketplace so I can join the club ... plus SG ownership is required if you own both an Orange amp and a Sovtek Big Muff
Is it the same model? You'll have to show up pics and let us know what you think.

Yeah it's the gold one. I was eyeballing the online sale but when I checked the gold version was backordered then I happened along one locally that's still got the plastic wrap on it. I was really hoping for one in tv yellow with p-90s and a stop bar tailpiece but apparently that's a bridge too far. Probably saving me from myself as I do prefer to not listen to 60 Hz all the time.
