Black Friday 20-23

Give the Range Finder or Chickenhead a try. Despite the name "treble booster," they're more of a mid-boost that works really well for 80s tones when paired with a JCM800. It's a little better suited to NWOBHM tones than hair metal, so if you're into Diamond Head, Judas Priest, Saxon, that kind of thing, you need to build one. It'll also do the Dokken/George Lynch-style singing leads, Iommi-esque riffing, and a lot more depending on what input capacitor you use and how your amp is set up. But there's no pedal out there that pairs better with an overdriven Marshall than a treble booster, IMHO. I find that the Range Finder has a more versatile tone control than the Chickenhead, but it also requires a rotary switch, which might be harder to find, depending on where you live (Tayda and AliExpress have them). And for a germanium transistor-based circuit, it's not very picky—any of the widely available mid-gain, low leakage Soviet transistors will work perfectly (GT308V, GT309E/G/V, GT310B, GT320B, P416A/B, etc.) will work perfectly.

I'd add the dragon's breath to that list too. The range knob gives it a bunch of flexibility. I bought a Naga Viper when I had a 2204

for me the PPCB proposition gets me the 80’s guitar tone I’m looking for. It can do the Def leopard/Boston sound for sure but I have no trouble dialing in other 80’s driven guitar tones too. My favorite 80’s distortion hands down.

Painkiller came out in 1990
There's absolutely no difference in 1989 and 1990 in regards to hair metal hair styling. And we all know the hair was the tone, to a degree

Now 92, yeah

Also, hot take, Painkiller was the best produced/engineered album for Priest at that time.

But in all seriousness, when you strip down the *good* 80s tones, fx aside, it's clear mids, tight bass and harmonic content galore. The 90s midscoup revolted against that.
Then there JATMJ/MBV stuff....
But if you look at "mainstream Euro metal"(behemoth), it follow the same rules. Just a little more gain.
Even the grandfather's of djent, meshuggah, are very mids forward with a super cut low-end(even with 8 strings)

My point, don't discredit new tools for historical tones.
Then again. So many different base tones fed through Yamaha units,.what even is an 80s tone? The FX play into so much more than the amp.

You know, I clicked on the link, saw the lovely dancing guy, laughed, and still assumed that this was a valid statement—so I spent the weekend rushing through the next 15 pedals in the queue that I haven't done any parts ordering for, to make lists for what I'd get from Tayra. It was not a waste of time, but now I'm pretty bummed out that when I started a new order at Tayra, and there was no obvious mention of a coupon, I still continued with the first group (alpha pots)—then decided I should really look too make sure there's a coupon.

Yes, @Paradox916, you are a monster!! But thanks for that lovely dancing guy; I find that when I'm unhappy about anything, I can always look at that and it makes me feel much better!

Yes, I too spent an inordinate amount of time looking to see if there really was a coupon anywhere (thinking that maybe the picture of the dancing guy was just to underscore what a great discount was available) . Based on their Facebook page, however, it looks like Tayda hasn’t offered a coupon since about March 2020.

Woke up too late to get to my nearest record store before they’d be cleared out of everything I was looking for. Went to Newbury Comics instead since it’s much closer and I was able to get there in the first 5 min of opening. Didn’t have any of the records I was looking for except the Flaming Lips live record for way more than it should have been. I’ll hit the record store that’s an hour away from me later tonight to see if they by some magic chance still have a copy or two of some of the things I was looking for

Not a sale but in the spirit. Loaded up junk from electronics goldmine.
They may still have some t-funk bc239s left.
Also recommend the Fairchild tn3019s for a consistent npn 100 hfe.

AionFX has a 20% off sale on PCBs through Monday the 27th. They also dropped about eight new projects on the 24th, including one of the Keeley Compressor Plus that I grabbed (I tried the commercial version of that pedal and really loved it).

Mike
I grabbed the new Amptweaker Tight Fuzz and the ring stinger pcbs. Super excited for both. The AionFX Ember is my favorite high gain distortion so I have high hopes for the Tight fuzz.

I got a couple Aion projects. The Neurotron since I never got the guts to build my own Ring Stinger design a few years ago and the EM-5 delay because it's friggin' delay.
Nice! I have had my eye on the em-5 pcb for a while. I almost grabbed it this time but I have too many builds in the que with expensive chips already.

LOL, I grabbed that EM-5 too, and a Tight Metal because finally already.

NB Effects Layouts has 20% off with code TURKEYHANGOVER. And HM-2 Cult has the Chainsaw PCB for $4.00, not sure if it's Black Friday related. He even provides a Tayda drill template (y)
