Rejoice, tube enthusiasts! Shuguang is back.

Yesterday, I got a newsletter from Antique Electronic that listed Shuguang tubes on their “new products” list. Curious, I emailed and asked whether they were from the PSVANE factory or whether the larger Shuguang factory was back in action.

Well guess WHAT??

AES confirmed the Shuguang factory is indeed online and separate from the PSVANE factory, bringing the total up to 4 (including New Sensor/Reflektor in Russia and JJ’s in Slovakia).

Bad news for tube alarmists. Good news for everyone else!

idk..

yes, most of JJs is back to relatively normal pricing. this is good.
but anything new sensor (russian) is still fucked, if you can get it.

hopefully the return of shuguang will add some competition to level it out again.

Priced did spike and availability did slip on the Russian brands, but the former are receding and the latter hasn’t been an issue for a few years (since the initial sanctions).

Indeed, Genalex branded tubes aren’t where I’d like them to be, but quality-wise they’re worth it. My 6V6s still test strong after nearly 4 years of use in my daily driver Deluxe Reverb build!

I bought a matched pair of EHX 6V6s several months ago and the price seemed reasonable- right now at Sweetwater it’s $65 for those, $80 for GT-matched 6V6-S, and $111 for the Genalex (which is wild to me…). The only change in availability is they no longer carry straight-up JJ’s 6V6-S tubes.

Time to make some tasty YouTube videos about how tube amps are no longer dead based on this one factory producing tubes again! A nice counter to the 2022 videos proclaiming tube amps are dead because one tube business owner said tubes are gonna much more rare from now on.

Not to name names (sorry, Rhett Shull) but those videos were embarrassing.

wet floors

For the dripping sarcasm!

Those scare videos were more than absurd- they were incorrect by the time they were uploaded. The Russian factory was cut off for what, a week before some kind of deal or exception was granted?

The Psvane tubes I’ve tried so far have been excellent, and I’ve thought reasonably priced. Their 5AR4 has kept me from using the few NOS GEs that I have in my one tube rectified guitar amp; I was keeping them for hi fi stuff, but am beginning to think of selling them and using the Psvanes instead, especially since the prices on the GEs has gotten absurd.

But I‘m also unsure of how large their production is, and having a major factory producing again is great news for all of us tube lovers.

CE Dist, the wholesale division, has them as well. I tried every search phrase I could think of, but I couldn't find a Shuguang website. I had the old site bookmarked but it just does a 401. In the old days, the Shuguang direct sales were even less than CE Dist....
