CONTEST It's about time... Pedal Giveaway

CONTEST

Woah, where am I? What year is it? ChatGPT? Luigi? What are you all on about? Wait, where's fig? Oh brother...

What's up everybody? I'm not sure how many of you will recall, but in November 2021 I posted this thread announcing a pedal giveaway. The poll in that thread voted for the PedalPCB Sugarbag OD, based on the Beetronics Fat Bee, as the pedal that I would build and giveaway to one lucky winner. I ordered the PCB, gathered most of the parts, then vanished... Life did what life does and got in the way, and soon after I had pretty much abandoned pedal building completely. The build sat with many others half finished, I stopped participating in this forum and most others except Reddit, and I never came back to start the actual giveaway thread. For this I sincerely apologize. I made a promise and left this community hanging; and although life goes on and I'm sure most people have forgotten, I am finally here to make good on that promise.

Over the year's I've occasionally stopped by and lurked, and I'd have the urge to get back into building but never followed through. Around a year ago I had a friend over and was showing him my pedal board. He really liked the Aion Redhsift phaser I had built during the pandemic, and he asked if I could build him one. I did, and this got me back into it. I have since also started working on tube amps for him and his brother, and I finally got around to finishing a few builds I had lying around. It's been a real treat working on all that cool gear, but I personally can't continue with this hobby any further until this giveaway is complete. So here it is:

In retrospect, giving away a fully built pedal on a forum dedicated to building pedals may not be the most exciting thing, but here is my build. A rather stylish (if I do say so myself) Tayda UV printed enclosure, real Lumberg audio and DC jacks, a GØRVA Mechano footswitch, Cusack/Stompboxparts pots, Remmington wire, Panasonic, WIMA, EPCOS, and Kemet caps. This build represents the standards I've come to expect since starting this hobby about a decade ago. Throughout that journey, the PedalPCB community has brought me more than I could ever ask from a bunch of internet strangers. I am glad to see that the forum continues to grow and to see many old faces still around. This giveaway was inspired by the kindness and generosity expressed throughout this community.

This giveaway is US only. At the moment I can only reliably ship to US addresses. I am sorry to my friends around the world who may have wanted to participate. I have some small plans to share digital resources with the community as a whole, so stay tuned.

TO ENTER: Simply reply to this thread. There is no specific prompt, but I'm curious to know what your favorite overdrive pedal is. If there is any consensus that may be my next build... I currently rock a Zendrive clone and use it set to low gain to boost my tube amp, aimed at high gain/modern metal tones. All replies to this thread will be counted as an entry, limited to one entry per person. This thread will be open for submissions until Wednesday, January 22 @ 5PM EST. The winner will be drawn randomly and announced around 6PM EST. I will also reach out to the winner via DM to arrange shipping. The pedal will be shipped at no cost to the winner.

Peace.

For my purposes, probably the Fortin Modded Tubescreamer. I used to use higher gain pedals with my amp. But my amp already has quite a bit of breakup, so the boosty high-output with the dirt on that YATS does the trick for me.

Well damn! A prodigal returns🤣. Always fun to see an avatar from threads long past reappear. Welcome back. As far as drives, the ones I really like are the Skreddy Screwdriver and Lunar Module. What’s on my gig board is a little more basic b*tch with a MBP Bluesteel (BD-2) and a PPCB Tommy III (Timmy).

That is an immaculate build; better looking inside and out than many boutique retailers.

I'm always searching for an OD that doesn't sound like a DOD250. I'm not sure what that is. Currently, Zen Drive is my favorite, but I have high hopes for the Oasis for giving me more clarity before going into full distortion.

Happy 2025!

I got here after you left, so we missed each other like ships in the night… until now. Welcome back. Nice to meet you. You pedal build is super clean. Very cool. My favorite OD is the Fairfield Circuitry Barbershop. It’s a lighter OD, but it’s on almost all the time on my board.

Of all the various corners of the internet to hang out and talk about obscure hobbies this one has become my favorite. Mostly because it's so active! And everyone is genuinely friendly and has excellent knowledge/opinions/wisdom/perspectives to share.

I've been using a stripboard build of a Yamaha AMD-100 American Monster Drive for a little while now on the "Tubescreamer" side. It's decent - would probably benefit from modding the channel switch to a blend mod, but as it is it's a solid mid-gain drive.

I recently built a mojo drive pedal for a pal using the Amplified Parts CMOS Fuzz PCB using the Catalinbread Hyper Pak specs and tacking on a no-scoop Big Muff tone stack at the end - I'm going to have to build myself one and it'll probably knock the AMD-100 off my board. So simple but so full of expression.

So many great overdrives out there. If we are talking about boosting/tightening up a high gain, for me, my favorite is the PPCB Dwarven Hammer (Horizon Precision Drive).

My favorite is the VFE Distortion 3, which I did do as a DIY build since Madbean carries the boards. The D+ is an all-time favorite for me, but this version crosses over into Rat territory and can work well with brighter, Fender-style amps more easily.

Beautiful job on the graphics! really clever going with the ubiquitous Domino sugar aesthetic! Really sharp!

I don't know if I really have a favorite OD since I kinda jump around based on mood– I find most drives to be fairly interchangeable in a full band context, so I don't see any one in particular as being more essential to me than another. I could play any song on a les paul, or a strat and be just as happy with the sound either way; it's just about mixing things up and keeping them interesting to me.
If I had to pick a favorite, I'd maybe say the Systech Harmonic Energizer, which is honestly more of an EQ than a drive, but it's got lots of different funky tones in it.

Interesting choice, I built the Systech Overdrive and loved it's weird filter tone. I will have to try the harmonic energizer. haha one more for the back log
