What's your current headache?

I would agree, in a vacuum, with the statement that "not all advertising is bad". The issue is the constant bombardment of annoying and irrelevant advertisements, and moreover, the fact that those advertisements brazenly intrude upon and aggressively obfuscate your interaction with the actual media you are trying to consume.

I don't mind, for example, when a YouTube channel I follow takes a calculated break at a convenient time in their own video to advertise a product they themselves endorse. This doesn't feel like a violation and incites way less rage than SCREAMING ADVERTISEMENTS ABOUT THINGS YOU HAVE NO INTEREST IN BEFORE YOU'RE ALLOWED TO WATCH THE VIDEO AND NO YOU CAN'T SKIP THEM AND FUCK YOU IF YOU USE AN ADBLOCKER TO MAINTAIN A SHRED OF SANITY.

So, in the same vein, your ideas above would not be as poorly received, as long as the whole site wasn't plastered with banner ads that distract from the actual content. That said, people like me would probably never see them anyway (adblockers), so YMMV.

I've been thinking about this a lot lately... I have zero interest in this forum generating revenue directly. Not a penny. I don't even want it to pay for itself. At the end of the day it's a component of the shop site. It's an expense, just like tape and labels.

You'll never see an advertisement for a Keurig or male enhancement pills in the sidebar... I'd shut the place down before I'd let it turn into that.
Paid advertisements aren't happening, and the site is not for sale.

Recently though, I'm questioning if all advertising is bad.

I had an inquiry from PCBway recently about allowing them to advertise on the site. My initial response was "Thanks but no thanks", but then it hit me.. What if they offered a discount? I don't want a kickback or commission, but if it could save the members here some cash?

Similarly, we're set up as an affiliate for Brian Wampler's new pedal building course, and I'm wondering it it would be possible to pass my commission on as a further discount to the person buying the course.

Would it really be spam to know if StompBoxParts was running a sale this week?

Or that @bean is now offering Madbean stuff through Smallbear? (I mean how cool is that? Although I'm sure he'd prefer you to buy direct)

Again, I wouldn't want to be compensated for these "ads".... They feel more like DIY-scene essential PSAs to me.

I don't know, just random thoughts. Maybe this should be it's own thread.
Tbh, the forum already does that by itself part of the time - there are some threads that are basically "Hey, XYZ is having a sale, thought you might want to know!".

It is essentially advertising, but that kind of advertising is usually great. I think the main difference is that it has been pre-screened by someone else on the forum - they thought it was good enough of a deal that other people probably wanted to hear about it, either from the discount itself or that it is a trustworthy store (probably both).

In my eyes, it doesn't really matter much whether that screening is done by you or by a random forum member, as long as it's unintrusive and something the community considers a "good deal".

Not sure how the recent enclosure advertising threads rank up here... At first I was annoyed, but the actual content was pretty cool for some people on here, I'm sure. They should have stuck to a single thread though, IMO. And it's always fishy when someone advertises themselves, for example I have full faith in bean doing advertising "the correct way", but you never know with random vendors.

that sort of advertising makes sense. meanwhile I pulled up tdpri for comparison and I'm being advertised shit I've been shopping on Amazon.

Cap maybe?
Well....
Tested the cap as 26uF(rated 30uF) yesterday.
$472.74 later I have a new starter cap and the old one is now testing at 5uF.
Must have been on its death spiral.
Sad thing is, I have one *somewhere where I won't lose it* and I can't find it.
So, everyone get on Bezos mart and order you a starter cap. $15-30 insurance policy. HVAC tech says Mars is a good brand. My old TE only made it 2 years.
@Stickman393 got any preferred starter cap brands?

Mars is not my preferred cap brand. It's OK in a pinch if you've gotta get it going and need something now. But their lifespan is awful in my experience. Maybe get 2-3 seasons out of em. If your condenser is in the shade most of the time, maybe a bit more.

Its a dirty little secret in the HVAC world. Supply house carries mars, mars is focused on providing as few products for as many systems as possible and don't particularly have a focus on quality. They're just there, they get used, and while they're serviceable they're really not made to last. So the service tech gets another bite at the apple when it fails a few years down the road. Bleh.

Amrad is my preferred cap manufacturer. US-made, never had to change one that I put in.

Granted, my sample size isn't *really* big (I'm a commercial mechanic, most of what I work on is 3 phase), but I occasionally look at friend's units and get em going. PSC motors are like, babytown frolics.

ive had this rice box for over 10 years.

its definitely let me down before (cast pistons will do that)
but since i had a forged bottom end built, it’s been bulletproof..

…until some electrical bullshit decided to just happen out of nowhere.

battery hadn’t been the healthiest (it’s a weekender) and recently it went flat, so i disconnected the battery overnight before attempting a jump start to get to band prac the next day.
i didn’t get to band prac 😭

upon reconnection of the negative terminal to the battery:
- lights flashing, dash clicking - crazy shit i’ve never seen it do before upon previous jump starts and battery replacements. wtffffffff.

so i threw in:
- new battery
- new key fob battery
- mechanic mate went over the ECU with his fancy flash tool thingo.

nothing.

so this morning i got it towed to the local subie tuners…

current diagnosis:
culprit appears to be an old aftermarket alarm system in there that i had no idea about.

bloke is estimating it’ll cost about 600 dollarydoos to fix/remove
😵

a couple of months ago our Nissan Qashqai 1.2 started making a lot of smoke, I mean, a lot of smoke, like a locomotive. After several mechanical diagnosis we found out its particular engine series had a known issue, almost impossible to fix, but it was just out of warranty.
Cutting short, since we can't afford a new one we changed the engine: 10000 €, more or less 11500$ .
I sweared so much I broke the space-time continuity.
