What’s really good?

At least you're not having to learn Twinkle Little Star.

I hated learning that crap when I was 8 or 9.
Teacher should've taught me some boogie-woogie, stride or a rag — then I might still be playing keys...

I kuda been da next Oska Pederson, I kuda been a concerto pianerist, I kuda been s u m b u d d y ...

So, stickwife and I were talking about sex dice, and how they're kinda dumb.

Which led me to say "yeah, and like, the combination is always something like 'lick...butt'"

And now she can't stop laughing.

This reminds me - a few weeks ago I was on a kick reading reviews of sex dolls (they're very funny, I highly recommend doing this). Choice quotes:

"I don’t know what people are on about saying the eyelashes keep falling off"
"f you screw the head all the way on it’s not straight… annnnnd you might as well buy some super glue because the nails fall off sooo easy"
"I don't think I put the head on correctly which was difficult. The hands seem to be facing the wrong way and is a pain to try to fix."
"Best part is it came with a really comfortable blanket which I love."
"the eye lashes and fingernails can become detached"
"Eyelashes and fingernails seem to become detached on a regular basis and have to be fished out of all sorts of places."
"The box she arrives in is about the size of a small coffin and requires two people to carry it."

There was another quote I can't find about the head constantly falling off in mid-use. I hadn't realized these things are actually human sized in height and weight. The whole experience seems very uncanny.

Been making nice advances in my singing lessons. I feel like I can finally sing more or less strain-free for the first time ever - although I'm sure there are a couple more layers I can unlock when I progress, plus I can't go too high yet without automatically straining.

I've also had issues where talking makes me go hoarse quite quickly, but I realized (through the singing lessons) that I never really relaxed my abs before, which might have caused it. At least I could sing today after a training day at work where I talked a lot, so it might have helped.

As we near the end of the year I realise that this has actually been a GOOD year for us. About time! We have had the normal family issues with older parents, yadda yadda... But this year my wife and I have been to some fantastic gigs. It took us a long time to work out that it was only us amongst our friends who kept going to live music events. We both LOVE live music and now realise that its one thing which drew us together in the first place. Sometimes it takes a while for the obvious to sink in...

And this year my wife finally got a book published. She has been writing for over 20 years and is pretty bloody good at it these days. Then my son's partner finished her Vet Science degree and already has her dream job sorted - she starts at the practise she was hoping for in January and will be on an excellent salary. This week my son, who is working as a graduate architect, found out he has passed all his exams and will become a registered architect shortly. This means a pay rise and extra responsibility and is a huge load off his mind. He won't be studying every weekend for a while now.

On a much less significant level, at least to my family, this year I have been able to create (with @Chuck D. Bones and @szukalski 's help) some of the drive pedals which have been in my head for years. I even have my own PCBs of some of them. I actually never though this would be possible, so am incredibly grateful for the help they and others here have given me. Chuck has surprising patience with me and Mr Szukalski is a sheep-loving legend.

All in all I feel this year has been tough but rewarding. I wish you folks in the USA who are doing it far tougher get some relief soon.

Whoa, this has really brightened my day. It's amazing how reading a bunch of feel good stories reminds me of all the positives in my life.

I've been skateboarding pretty much every weekend for the last year or so, and I'm really happy with all the new tricks I'm learning and friends I've made. On my 30th birthday I went for a solo skate, and a kind stranger-turned-buddy taught me how to roll-on frontside 5-0. Skaters are (usually) the nicest folks.

In other news, I received my Graduate Certificate of Creative Industries today. It's nice to have this milestone recognised on my way to a masters degree. It's been a huge learning curve, starting tertiary education at the post-graduate level, but I keep getting good grades so I must be doing okay. What it really means is I'm now able to move from my undervalued technician position at a private university, into a teaching position with much more opportunity for progression - monetary and personal. I also found out that my employer had been taxing me way too much due to a clerical error (my own), and boy howdy it's nice to confidently say "I can pay all my bills this month" every month.

TLDR; skateboarding as a grown-ass man is good, getting a fancy bit of paper from uni is good, a budget in the green is good.

Hey @beansell - I used to skate as a teenager and when my son was a teen he got into skating big time. He was more into longboarding than park skating though, as was I back in the day. I tried one of his boards and man, they are so easy to ride these days! It was way bigger than the Penny sized board I had. I don't think he liked my riding hills with him though - way too embarrassing!

So my now architect son went to his now vet girlfriend's graduation last Friday and not only did she get her graduation certificate, she won 5 awards!! She only missed out on being dux by .3%. Friday night we joined them and a big bunch of her family for dinner down in a cool restaurant and we had a wonderful time. Everyone was so happy for them - they are very likeable kids. They are so, so happy!

@HamishR Those longboards are super easy to roll around on. Board sizes and shapes have really come a long way since the Lords of Dogtown.
Let this be the encouragement to get back on that board, think about how happy you could be!
