Stuff you wanted to know but were afraid to ask

Can effect loops be randomly inserted in existing circuits?

Like after the wet signal of a delay, between gain stages, between the gain and the tone section, and so forth? Are there rules for this, or articles going deeper into such modifications?

Randomly, yes. Blindly, not always.

(Impedance, levels, etc)
Yeah, I was audio probing a circuit and sometimes you got these in between stages that make me wonder about how to feed something else in at that point instead of simply before or after the pedal.

I suppose simply inserting audio in thr signal line and see what happens can't hurt a thing? Just never tried it...

That may not be enough. You may need some extra buffering either on send or return or both.

Mostly harmless, but careful with bbd inputs. Don't want them too hot.

If I’m doing a combo build and don’t want an insanely large enclosure (going for a 1590BB and trying to avoid 1590XX) could I just stack the boards to save space? Everything would be wired off board of course and a barrier between the 2 boards.

As long as you keep them electrically isolated there's no reason you couldn't, it would just be a little difficult to mount them securely.

I have used pin headers and sockets to separate the PCB's in some pedals I've made, I also use them to connect the stomp switch to the main PCB in my C2CE (Sushi Box) pedals as it seems like a nice distance to set the stomp switch in the box.

Have you seen @captain's stereo Low Tide? I mean, it's not a 1590BB but still....
