Transistor Sockets

I just use jumper wires to a small breadboard from the PCB to quickly audition transistors…best of both worlds

You could add a breadboard inside the pedal as sockets

my advice is simply based on my personal experience of what i’ve found to be worthwhile. and that’s not gonna be for everyone.
but if you’re taking my advice as a personal dig or some righteous claim then idk, that might just be a you problem

I'm not trying to coerce anyone to use/avoid sockets —My post basically said: "to each their own".


I might be a socketeer, but there's no socket-tear here, no black-eye...

The rule is if you use transistor sockets you must also use an outie DC jack, a white washer on the foot switch and DYMO labels on the enclosure for maximum forum outrage.

All joking aside, I always use IC sockets because ICs have too many legs and screw-ups would be frequent with my soldering skills, plus the fit is secure and they allow for IC swaps in case of duds.

I quickly outgrew transistor sockets. I test the circuit and commit to solder. I never revisit a circuit or try new transistors in it later on.
If you do use transistor sockets, the fit is loose so a drop of hot glue can help.

I try to say simply what I like to do. Not trying to tell anyone what to do - and in saying what I like to do I like to give a reason to explain. There's (probably) more than one way to skin a cat. I dunno - never skinned one, and I'm not about to start. I think building pedals is fun which is why I prefer it over skinning small vertebrates. And this is no way a dig against Feral Feline, who doesn't seem all that feral to me, and I suspect may not even be feline (No offense). I have never seen a feline use a computer, whether connected to the internets or not. Even kitty litter can be a stretch for most cats I've known so how is a cat supposed to know how to breadboard a circuit?

Maybe I should take up skinning cats... But definitely not owls.

thanks for all the info and sources! Wow, my first post RE sockets and it took on a life of its own

lots of great info though! i’ve soldered pots and guitar wiring before but never PCB work and mainly afraid i’ll overheat and fry the tranies.
I’m also worried about the traces and leg pads getting too hot as well. Maybe there’s a good cheap PCB I could get 2 or 3 and just install components. i’ll try post a photo of my new unboxed iron in a few…

My renewed interest in pedal building (The 1st was Craig Anderton’s late 70’s Guitar Player column) is the desire to acquire Skreddy’s trio of Rangemaster/Fuzz masterpieces and the discovery of this forum, Chuck’s hard work, and the Fuzz Aldrin PCB to make this a debut DIY project of magnificent proportions!
