PedalPCB Angry Charles (JHS Angry Charlie v3)

I had a little Peavey 2x8 stereo amp that had every effect imaginable along with about 50 presets. HAD to have been one of the first of its kind. This was like ‘94 but I had complete Floyd songs dialed into that thing. Couldn’t pay me to attempt to do that in today’s menu diving.

Interesting, I do not even remember which one I had but that sounds interesting.
 
This was probably my 4th or 5th build and I was pretty underwhelmed as well. It also has the distinction of being the pedal that revealed a small stack of fake TL072s in my parts stash. Replaced it and it sounded less broken, but still not terribly exciting. Agreed that the tone shaping doesn't have a huge amount of range.

My first two amps were solid-state Peaveys. I'm not a Peavey hater, but they both sounded like complete shit. I didn't hate them at the time; they were all I knew. I bought a BFDR in 1991, mostly because I'd been reading Vintage Guitar magazine and I knew that it was a great deal that I could easily flip to buy more pedals. That idea went out the window as soon as I heard the difference between that and whatever Peavey I had... I wish I could think of the name of that thing.

Yep, this kid's getting old. I was in college at the time, and my only sources of income were gigging for other drunk college students and flipping gear. People at the time had figured out that vintage guitars had value, but I figured out before the pawn shops did that there was money to be made in amps.

The other side of that coin, though, is that there was no Reverb, eBay, Craigslist, Offer-Up... nada. Just my local music store. They'd never give me the cash I wanted, but we worked a lot of trades.

I too have purchased a few fake op-amps. But yes, I found I was not able to dial in tone that pleased me. I know somebody likes it. I guess that’s the cool thing about pedals.
 
I've built a couple of these and actually thought they sounded pretty awesome and very usable EQ section..... Might have something to do with the fact that I had been testing and playing live with either line6 stomp or Tonex the past decade.... I've just recently went back to playing a tube amp live but I still use Tonex at home for practice.
