SOLVED Whipped Cream Overdrive Problem

Put this together today but having an issue. When powered on and engaged I get a loud hum. It sounded like an errant ground somewhere. I tested the input by testing with my meter and it is connected to ground. Can't seem to see a reason for it unless I'm missing something obvious. I examined all the solder connections and they look good with no bridges. I haven't checked parts values yet as I don't think that would cause this issue.

very likely your footswitch daughter boards.. their backwards...

You have your Tone / Bypass breakout boards swapped.

They're marked and not interchangeable.

Thank you. I knew it had to be something obvious.

I swapped the breakout boards. The signal drops to almost inaudible after C1. I checked values to that point and are ok.

What about AFTER C1...?

R2 the correct value?

Can't see R2 in your previous set of pics. Post more pics of the component side so nothing is hidden.

R2 is correct. Out of frustration I reversed Q1 and got a good signal through the transformer to Q4. I did the same to all the blue J201s and get signal to the output. The tone pot, color switch, and tone footswitch have no effect. I'm guessing it's a coincidence and need to verify the rest of the parts.

As can be seen, the pcb shows pinouts for thru the hole J201s and based on other successful pedals the only reliable ones I have are the SMD versions. I may try the questionable TTH ones to see what happens.

yes... but in the photos your breakout boards are flipped backwards compared to through hole pinout.... they are technically wrong.

yup.. look a little closer... you currently have it plugged into Gate source drain.... which ... again... is backwards

Thanks everyone for the help! I had reversed the transistors yesterday and finally got a signal but as I mentioned above the tone controls did not work. The black SMD was the problem. On my transistor tester it did not register the same as the blue ones (Tayda sourced). Once I replaced the black one with a blue one it all seems to work OK.

And, the thru the hole J201s I have also worked in the curcuit but I have no idea if their real. They do test out the same as the SMDs.
