Modified TS-808

Reading @MichaelW 's post about his TS-808 build reminded me about my own experiments with that circuit. As someone who uses very few pedals in a chain and dislikes most buffers I wanted to try building a TS-808 without the transistor stages. Then I thought that I might as well add a Bass pot while I'm at it because I never really liked the lack of lows on a TS. And then I thought I'd use a double pair of clipping diodes to reduce the amount of compression - I like less compression in a dirt pedal.

So it's basically a simplification which has been done before. I think the original simplified TS was the Son of Screamer? But I wondered if it would still sound like a TS-808 with the extra diodes and a bass pot as well. So this is what I came up with:

And it works! I was surprised at how much I like it. It still sounds like a TS-808 but, well, with slightly less compression, the option to adjust low end and with fewer parts - always a good thing in my book.

I could still simplify it further by using a treble circuit like on the Timmy but then it's not really a TS-808 any more. In fact I really think this is maybe how the Timmy came about in the first place. The Eternity pedals too.

How many of you guys do stuff like this? I'm no electronics guy but I love messing about with circuits. I have come up with quite a few circuits like this and more like Timmy - things which aren't necessarily "better" but which suit my taste and rig. It's fun tuning a simple OD to your rig!

That’s what I love about messing with circuits @HamishR - not to make them better but make them better for me. We all have such different tastes that knowing how to tweak a pedal for your amp or ear is so helpful.

My problem with (bufferless) YATS is tone pots. Must be W-Taper. And then Mr Wiltshire came to rescue. Or we can build scaled version if we dont have exact pots.
I've never really had a problem with a boring old B25K tone pot. Maybe it's because I have so rarely used a TS?

FWIW I just pulled out my Paternity OD today - it's my version of an Eternity but with a bass pot - and that only has a 5K tone pot! I was surprised at how much I liked the sound of it. It's not a very complex sound but it works, especially with some extra low-end rolled in. It's very much a simplified TS.

It really is, isn't it? I started with amps maybe 20 years ago and pedals more recently, and it's only now I'm really getting my sound dialled in! Some things take me a while...
