This is a report for the PPCB Glory Hole, based on the JHS Morning Glory. I saw this recommended a bunch of times - I think primarily on Reddit - and figured I'd give it a shot. It's an easy build and one of my most-used pedals.
Inspiration
The inspiration here was pretty obvious. Since the original pedal is the Morning Glory, I wanted the pedal to have a Mourning Dove theme. I have a soft spot for Mourning Doves. They're pretty birds and they're kinda one of the birds that just clears the "this is interesting" line (compared to a house sparrow or something). Some birds are just a little boring. I don't have a lot to say about Mourning Doves. They're basically fancier pigeons.
For the design I started out thinking of also playing on the 'glory' theme, so some kind of halo or ray. I envisioned a Byzantine sort of design with gold and halo, but I just couldn't quite make it work... I'd still like to for some future pedal. I went through a LOT of design iterations before landing on a sort of floral background of rays emanating from the dove. In general I've started to move more towards a traditional pedal design, rather than some of my previous designs that are more like poster landscapes. Not to say that I don't also have a bunch of landscape-style builds to post! Overall I'm very happy with the design, which is a Tayda UV print on a cream enclosure and with cream-colored knobs. It's very tasteful if I say so myself. I think the Tayda cream color is really underrated.
The Build
Not much to say here. The components are all stock, I socketed the IC and transistor but haven't found something better than the LM833N and 2n5457. This is an older build that was rehoused once I completed the design. As you can see from the guts for this one I was still using the ugly footswitch daughterboards included with Amazon purchases.
The Pedal
It's wonderful. As I said this is one of my most-used pedals, and it's my first Bluesbreaker variation. It's a good one. I've since built the Paragon Mini (KoT), and the Parthenon (Wampler Pantheon). I don't like the Pantheon - but have to give it more time. This competes with the Paragon Mini... I think the Paragon is a little better-sounding, but this pedal is probably a better overall value for time and ease of finding parts. I like it with drive turned up to medium. The Mourning Glory paired with with a good humbucker was one of the first times where I started playing and thought "Damn, this tone sounds so good!" (On my only amp, a Boss Katana MkI). Then I was able to take it to the next level by following it with a Chop Shop, adding a bit of clarity and crispness. I might design a Mourning Glory + Chop Shop double pedal that drops the switches, which I don't fiddle with for either.
