Peterson Mini Enclosure?

I've wondered the same thing about the One Control enclosures that somehow cram a battery in there... Again, probably custom.

Had no idea! A bit pricey for a tiny enclosure, but still, good to know it exists. It'd be fun (read: maddening) to try and cram a one-knob fuzz in there with a battery...
I don't get why people STILL use batteries. Buy a decent power supply and be done with it. A daisy chained one-spot is fine for many situations, or get an isolated supply. Maybe I'm missing something.

Thanks for sharing. Most don’t. That’s good.

No one is using batteries in lieu of a modern, isolated power supply, though. The latter is a non-negotiable utility that every musician needs, you’re absolutely correct.

In a fuzz they can last many years, and may have a noticeable impact on sound that even a starved power supply can’t replicate (carbon zinc esp). Plus, as a gigging musician it can be a nice safety net, like in a smoke detector. I had a DC jack crunched before a show once, but it was a Boss pedal so I popped a battery in and was all set.

Again, this is the exception and not the rule, as most builders don’t include snaps anymore.

Yeah some of the VooDoo supplies have a SAG feature, never used it. But for fuzz I can see it. But I am surprised to see a lot of the DIY builds (Aion, PPCB) do allow for the battery option if needed. Like you say, the exception... maybe 1% of all pedals built actually use the battery?!? Just guessing.

Granted there is only one jack and no 3PDT, but I feel like it should be possible with some clever engineering if the circuit / layout is compact enough.

This is my little tone generator and an example where a battery is the only thing that makes sense. It's only advantage over a true function generator is it's simplicity. If I had to connect a DC power supply each time I'd just grab the real thing.... but most of the time I just need a tone. I don't care about the frequency, duty cycle, etc...

Yeah... I noticed that in the Coming Soon section. Waiting for build documents!

Bingo! This is EXACTLY the type of situation a battery is perfect for! I mean, do people plug their multimeters into a power supply..? I doubt it.

Well yes but a little different than a guitar pedal. A multimeter on a battery can last a year or more. Probably same with this tone generator because it isn't on for hours at a time like a guitar pedal. When I turn my pedalboard on for a gig it's on for 5-6 hours, probably like most musicians. So yes that tone generator on a battery is perfect.

Eh... I have some battery-only fuzz pedals I've had for years, and have only recently removed the (still chuggin) 9v for fear that it would leak due to age! Ha... It's crazy how low the draw is for many dirt circuits. I tested a Bosstone on an mA meter once and it didn't even register!

One Control use two methods for making their enclosures. The mini pedals I have the enclosures seem to be CNC cut out of billet (!). The sides are parallel rather than sightly sloped as you find in cast enclosures. They also cast a really nice 1590B size enclosure - I have an Animals Pedals Diamond Peak OD which has One Control molded into the casting inside. A real quality casting with some weight to it.

I also have a Peterson mini tuner and it is indeed a custom piece folded from steel. I imagine that's the only way they could get both jacks on the top edge. It's a great tuner!

As much as I hate using 9V-batteries, they still have their place.

For the last year that I gigged I just brought my HPF-Pre and Turbo Tuner, both on batteries — hauling a DB around HK whether sometimes in the car or often on public transport, I needed to pack light. Get to the gig, throw down the bamboo cutting board with the Pre and Tuner and go...

I've been looking at the USB-rechargeable batteries in 9V/PP3/006P/6LR61/MN1604 form-factor — I know some people were having trouble making them work for some effects-circuits, but I'm keen to see if the USBeebleYoonits are up to the task of my Pre and Tuner ... you know, in case I ever get to gig again.

Would be great if whatever factory made the Peterson tawp-jak enclosures would sell a few on the sly side... even with the big hole, I could just pop-rivet or screw a control panel into place...

The Peterson's are two pieces of bent sheet metal. You could probably create one somewhere like SendCutSend.

Yeah, you wanna be careful with any of the ones which boost the voltage above 9v... they produce ungodly amounts of noise.

I've used these and these to good affect, and they don't have the audio artifacts the higher-voltage ones have. You won't get more than around 8.6v out of them, but for certain things they work perfectly and last a while between charges. I keep one on my desk to power breadboards so I don't have to be tethered to a wall wart. Good for tuners, multimeters, etc. I've even used them in a Boss digital delay!
