Fuzz Face Clone

I posted earlier that I had inadvertently put a 100n in C3 on my SilliSmile, and it just sounds incredible...since I had made two, one with the correct value (10n) I compared them, and immediately changed the C3 in that one. As I had built an Old School Clone of my Fuzz Face, I went in and changed the 10n for 100n and now it is just as full and rich as the other two...It's like a secret sauce... IMG_1526.jpeg

I've got a fuzzface on my breadboard right now, but have just packed the guitar away so I'll try a 100nF tomorrow, thanks for the suggestion.

What transistors are you using? I'm trying KN2222As 134hfe for Q1 and 153hfe for Q2. I've substituted a 2K2 in for what is usually 390R resistor and 3k3 on Q2 collector. you get a lot more volume, probably too much!

How does it sound different, does that make sense?

Yes, it'll let more bass out — C3 in the Silismile is the output cap.

FWIW, SolidGoldFX's "If 6 Was 9" has a 100n for the output cap.

Colorsound 1-knob is 220n
D*A*M Meathead Dark is 100n
BAT Ritual is 220n
Dallas Arbiter, according to Mechanical Television, is 100n
Joe "9V-Nirvana" Gagan's EasyFace is a whoppin' 1µF (so's the input)

I used 108B in one and 108C the other with no discernible difference. My Clone has BC 183’s that are what was in my original Dallas Arbiter…

Through my old DSL 100, in the clean channel it’s rich distortion, in the Drive channel is total Heavy Metal…the Clone with the carbon resistors is slightly noisier than the SilliSmile, giving it an even more unhinged sound.
