80% of Pedal Building is...

Pedal building is 80% digging through the mess you've allowed to accumulate going "fucking cunt fuck dicknose fuck, where the FUCK are those 1.27mm pin headers I bought five years ago...."
I firmly believe that if you have a big enough pile of random stuff, anything you're looking for must be somewhere in there. If it's not, the pile is not big enough. I think this is mathematically indisputable.

80% of pedal building is me populating pcbs so my loved ones arent overburdened with my immense backlog when I kick the bucket. 19% giving completed functioning pedals to my brother or other guitar homies with hopes of them deriving inspiration. 1% keepers. AKA The C2C Lab Rat, PPCB Phase II, Madbean Current Lover, deadendfx wurmloch, and probably the PPCB hydra too but I keep giving those away cuz other people like delay more than me and make it sound better too. I have pretty much landed at my tonal happy place with those 1%rs but the C2C Lab Rat gets almost all the most play time. It sounds SOO good through my Carvin X100. The funny thing is the Carvin X100 was the first tube amp I ever bought back in 2002-2004 (I've purchased a Revv G20 and Marshall Origin 20 since but they don't get much play time) and I only ever used a Keeley modded Rat with it. I just recently had the Carvin cleaned up and hot rodded and it sounds better than ever. And now with the C2C Lab Rat sounds so much more defined and hi-fi. It's like beautiful toxic cascades of ratty rottenness. And that is I guess my tonal happy place.... now i just gotta learn how to play guitar..... I am also working on another lab rat cuz my brother needs one too, and I will probably build more lab rats because they fucking rule and I want all my guitar homies to have one.

edit: also I keep building mostly cuz I love you dudes and dudettes too. my wife is upset about it. She's always like "Estas hablando con Sancha de neuvo, no?" but I loves you sanchos and sanchas. I dont really have too many real life guitar friends let alone people who are willing to waste $$$ building YATS.

Pedal building is 80% staring off into the middle distance while you're at work, fantasizing about what you're going to build when you get home.

The other 20% is falling asleep on the couch instead.
There's fun in planning, yes. Just like how I find enjoyment in setting up things to work flawlessly, but then never use them. I see it in a lot of things I do. Things I actually finish, are almost always things people like me to do for them due to my skill set. It's hard to make things matter for yourself, as the mind wanders aimlessly and gets hooked on whatever equivalent of a red laser dot darts through my mind. What people want me to do is so focussed, and usually comes with some sort of deadline.

80% is building the pedal and then 20% playing the same 6 riffs over and over again to find the knob settings I like. Then I don’t touch em again until it goes off my board.
This 100% my wife's least favorite part. She says I need to learn some new riffs.
