Affinity Software - October 2025 Announcement

Email sent out today indicates “creative freedom is coming” October 30. The forums are marked for closure, licenses are no longer available, and the add-on store is gone.

Well, they had a good run. Not feeling optimistic about the “freedom.”

Glad I didn't waste a bunch of time on build docs....

Seriously though, the only thing I'm surprised about is that it took this long.

I think everyone saw this coming the moment Canva came on the scene....

Yep. Let’s see if they hold to this:

First point of the latest damage control email:

FAIR PRICING: Perpetual licenses will always be offered and we will always price Affinity fairly and affordably.

My patience is pretty non-existent with this kind of thing though. I’ll keep using the V2 software, but doubt anything else from them moving forward.

EDIT: Wonder if they’ll change the name for anything non-licensed and subscription-based. Also, huge no if any of this “freedom” involves generative AI.

Thanks for the heads up. Just downloaded what I guess might turn out to be the last v2 update, and planning to keep using that for however long it's feasible. I've gotten 3 good years for my initial $40 outlay, worst case.

'Creative Freedom' sounds too much like 'Liberty Day'...
The simplest translation for both phrases is "you're hosed".

Crap, I’m so naive. I glossed over the email and just assumed it was a new app. This blows if it’s the end.

I really like Affinity, I chose it over Adobe because I preferred it, not just because of the perpetual license. I had a perpetual CS8 license at the time, I made the switch because I wanted to, not because I was forced or to save money.

With that said, it's missing things and I've tended to ignore that despite the fact that some of them are fairly important. Not having a subscription fee made that a little easier to tolerate while waiting in hopes that it would one day be fixed.

If I'm expected to pay a subscription fee, however, it's just not going to be competitive with Adobe anymore.

Also, I've popped around on the Affinity forum a little and wow... there's a bit of a weird attitude from the admin over there.

I'll admit we don't really know what's going on, we could be wrong, this could be amazing news.... but what's nagging me is how they're silencing the forum ahead of time... Why do that? ...

I use Affinity Designer for just about everything these days - art work, turret board layout, chassis layout, etc. I feel like I can be pretty fast in it. As long as I can just keep using 2 I'll be good I guess.

I did buy VectorStyler to supplement it though, like the warping tools are really powerful. It's easy to go back and forth between the two via the clip board. But I noticed VectorStyler basically doubled in price.

I'm in full dinosaur mode. CS4. On a 2007 Mac Pro that I've managed to keep alive. Finally moved off spinners in the thing and it runs less hot. Good ol' space heater. I'm so stuck in my ways---25+ years of it is hard to move away from. I'd just as soon revert to the original Creative Suite [no number] on an iBook G3 than grovel at the feet of 'dobe

and i thought i was an outlier holding onto my 2012 mac mini... (not that i do anything fancy with it, pretty much just garageband demos and DIYLC)
The smoothness from my previous employer-provided M2 Max was stunning. The juttery performance Mac Pro is ...charming, if I'm being generous. The 30" Cinema Display I inherited from an even older previous employer shows maybe 88% of the sRGB gamut, and ghosts like mad. I have a 30" dell ultrasharp I might swap in, but the VESA mount won't work where that workstation is. It, too, ghosts a bit, but at least it has color depth: 110% sRGB, and 100% Adobe RGB, but that's for NatGeo nutters who have $$$$$ setups.

This is concerning...
