Anybody read any good books lately? (music related or other)

I usually listen to audiobooks while i'm working on pedals. I cant play music too loud because i mostly work on pedals after the sun goes down and the wife and daughter are asleep. I've come across a few audiobook gems this last 2 years. Some of my favorites are The shadow of the Torturer by Gene Wolfe. Its an excellent fantasy novel that is part sci-fi as well but wholly different from other books in the genre. The audiobook narrated by Roy Avers is top notch audiobook listening. Another sci-fi/fantasy book I enjoyed was The Dying Earth by Jack Vance. Im not sure how to describe this one. Beautifully written unique stuff. A Cantacle for Liebovitz is another great sci-fi novel. It reminds me of fallout videogames. its got some funny moments too. Have you guys read any good books or listened to any good stuff on audiobooks? oh yeah one last thing. I love H.P. Lovecraft and other horror writers of that era. HorrorBabble is a fantastic youtube channel that reads all the Lovecraft, Algernon Blackwood, Clark ashton smith and other greats.

I’m reading the Witcher series and I have to say it’s exceeding my expectations. If you’re interested I recommend starting from the two short stories books, in particular Sword of Destiny is really good.

A couple years ago, I was listening to a lot of audiobooks. I listened to the whole Witcher series and really liked that. A few others that I liked were Circe by Madeline Miller, the Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley, and Courting the Wild Twin by Martin Shaw.

Right now I'm reading Designing Tube Power Supplies for Tube Amplifiers by Merlin Blencowe and also How To Write Songs on Guitar by Rikky Rooksby, which is a book I wish I had found when I first picked up the guitar.

Audio books are cool.

Here's another thread:

I was reading Drive!: Henry Ford, George Selden, and the Race to Invent the Auto Age by Lawrence Goldstone, then had to put it down for a while, but can now pick it up again.

I'm with you on listening to audiobooks while I work on stuff. I finished the audio book of Fortunate Son by John Fogerty (and read by him) which was pretty good. I've been on a big Creedence/Fogerty kick ever since. I just started Lonely Boy by Steve Jones. He's such a charming guy and it kinda makes you forgive him being such a little bastard when he tells you about being a thief and whatnot as a young man. I've only gotten to the point where he and Paul Cook started playing music before they hooked up with John Lydon.

Finally getting around to reading How Music Works by David Byrne.

Jeff Tweedy has a new book coming out this week that sounds interesting

Audio Books are my main source of literature. If you haven't checked it out already, I highly suggest the Libby App. Allows you to hook up a library card and get TONS of free content (dependent on your library catalogue).

My recent favorite was the Red Rising series by Pierce Brown. It's like Braveheart meets the Count of Monte Cristo in space. I barely stopped listening for the first 3 books.

I could not find an audiobook of The Godfather but that is also highly suggested.

I'll add that last one to the ones to read, since we have/had all the others and liked them !

I do the same when building! Currently, I’m 3 deep in “the Enderverse” on audible. After watching the movie (Ender’s Game) a few months ago, I listened to the book.

Ender’s Game (finished)
Ender In Exile (finished)
Speaker for the Dead (almost finished)
Xenocide (upcoming…)

I also recently finished The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (read by Nick Offerman) and The Adventures of Huck Finn (read by Elijah Wood). The reader makes the story IMO!

A Man With One of Those Faces (The Dublin Trilogy Book 1) by Caimh McDonnell
Well written and funny Irish crime/humour.

The Stranger Times by CK McDonnell
Same author as above. Kind of urban fantasy set in Manchester UK, also well written and funny. Basically just read everything By CK / Caimh McDonnell; the two I posted are first books of ongoing series, I've read most of them and the quality is maintained.

Rivers of London by Ben Aaronovitch
More urban fantasy, set in London, a surprisingly convincing melding of police procedural and magical fantasy. Really well written and exciting, with plenty of interesting characters. There are 10 or so books in the series so far, plus a bunch of shorter works.

I don't use audiobooks, but all the above have very good audio versions from what I've heard.
(Amazon defaults to Amazon AU because I'm in Australia, but you'll be able to find your own versions from there).

The Birth of Loud: Leo Fender, Les Paul, and the Guitar-Pioneering Rivalry That Shaped Rock 'n' Roll
Really interesting history of the birth of electric guitars, though it meandered off a bit at the end.

Children of Time by Adrian Tchaikovsky
Excellent and highly original science fiction.
