This was built on Aion’s “legacy” Refractor PCB. It’s the first completed build for the Bass pedal board I have planned out.

It took a bit of digging to find the actual mods. I went off a photograph of the list of mods from this build report. I then compared the PPCB schematic to the Aion schematic, and made my own mod sheet that I’ll share here.

At first I put BATs in the magic spot. But later I thought if I’m going to bother building a klon, may as well put some mojo in there. I went with D9Bs. No complaints.

I moved the jacks closer to the lid to have clearance for the dual gang pot, which sits a little higher. But it was too close to the lid and wouldn’t close. I took a piece of scrap insulated wire and wrapped it around the shaft on the inside. It worked great.

The Klon never excited me. I have built two before and gave them both away. But people around here keep talking about the bass klon. I gotta say, I was kind of blown away, which doesn’t happen that often. This thing sounds awesome. At low gain and high gain settings. Instant keeper, excited to have this on my bass board.

Nice work! I have two of those boards in my stable, and I've built neither. I try to cram anything in a 1590B that I can shoe horn in there. The best sounding Klon I've made so far was from a MadBean board. I haven't taken it off my board since I finished it. I think I put D9Es in there.

I love the frequency response on Klons, but I know that 1KHz nasal-ness isn't for everyone. I'm also in the small camp that only uses them with the gain set at noon or higher. Using them as a clean boost has never worked with the ears and gear at my disposal.

Damn, now I need to build another klon for bass. Nice build and write-up! Not sure if this will work for you but I’ve had a couple 1590B builds that wouldn’t close and found a couple minutes’ work with a big file was all it needed. I’ll just take a chunk of the “lip” of the lid off around the jacks. Almost feels custom fabricated if you squint real hard and take your glasses off.
