Oh dear I must be really old! I can remember being in a studio when these things first came out and the owner of the studio pulled out a Linn Drum and showed us how it worked. I think it was horrendously expensive so it took a few years before other companies copied the idea and I could afford a drum machine. I used a Yamaha RX15 for years with my Tascam 234. Once in my young, innocent years I recorded the RX15, a synth track from a Juno 106, a bass track and a vocal track from a friend, mixed into into stereo onto a cassette and took it to our local alternative nightclub where the DJ played it over their huge sound system. It actually sounded pretty good. Good times.

I would probably cringe mightily if I heard it today...

Yes, similar concept, but a bit more primitive (no display) and more durable (no tact switches).
