Just picked up a used Boss OS-2 (along with an MD-2 and DS-2 to boot). Got one on a whim after watching a video of a guy who was demoing it side-by-side with other Boss pedals. He got the OS-2 to sound exactly if not damn near the ones he was A/B'ing them with. I was so impressed that I got one on the cheap just to experiment.
This thing pretty much knocked a lot of pedals off my shelf, mostly all the ones with a single tone knob: Uber Drive (Boss SD-1), Face Melter (Pussy Melter), and even the Greengage (Plume). The later is the one I'm most surprised about. I was able to match all the main tones I use the Greengage for. The others were pretty easy to match up.
The key is in the Color knob. It acts as sort of a blend knob between overdrive and distortion...but I think it's more than that. Seems like it effects the clipping, compression, and even the tone a bit with higher Color values. Regardless, it's amazingly effective. Can dial in everything from mild overdrive tones to rip-roaring distorted tones. Can match some of the tones from the MD-2 and DS-2...but those still have some tones that make them pretty unique so I decided to keep them on the shelf.
Gotta say...this is one of the most underrated Boss pedals. Very much surprised by it. Me like it!
