It's just that. A digital "pot"
These are 256 step variable resistors (idk if they can function as voltage dividers as well). Looks like the obne is just sweeping between the two steps you program into it. They socketed it as some exp inputs work better with different value pots. I'm really surprised they aren't used in more pedal circuits at this point.

What confuses me with this and other similar products (Expressionator) is that they don't list any maximum specs.

A digital pot typically has a maximum voltage equal to it's VCC, which is usually either 3.3V or 5V... How can we just blindly plug it into any expression-capable circuit?

I really need to get one of these and see which IC they're using.

EDIT: Nevermind, I see, MCP41x10. So yeah, I'm puzzled that there are never any guidelines listed as to where it can and can't be used.
