Do I Need a Buffer?

Breadboard Baker
Since I’ve started down this rabbit hole I’m wondering if I need to build an output buffer. I’ve got 6-7 pedals together and am thinking this is something I may eventually need. Do I still have time until I do need one or should I start building one now?

secondly, how can I build one and tack it on to an existing board? I’m assuming I’ll have to veroboard it. Can I simply attach the output wire of an existing board to the input of the buffer and then the output goes to the out jack? Can I hook this up to the same dc jack as the original board? I’m thinking this may go after my noise gate pedal which is right before my amp.

thoughts are appreciated

If any of those 6-7 pedals is an always-on pedal, it probably doesn't matter.

I don't think there's a rule for when you need one, it's really based on how things sound to you. If you detect loss of highs, and that signal loss bugs you, then a buffer should help--compare going through all your pedals vs straight to the amp and see if you notice.

There's also a couple of PCBs in the utility section if you want to go that route. Another option is to build one of the pedals that has a buffered bypass (klon, ocd, drv are some of them) and add that to your arsenal.

This is my thought process as well. I don't see much point in having a buffer unless you consistently turn all of your pedals off.
