Dream Fuzz (with some mods + soundtest)

Just closed up this Dream Fuzz with a few mods. Absolutely love the grind of an op amp fuzz. I popped this thing into an old (eddystone, I think?) enclosure I got from a friend. The slightly smaller size was a bit of a squeeze with the mods, and I built it upside down cuz why not. I think the screws look cool. Controls are the same as the standard plus an additional led/diode clipping option in between the volume and sustain knobs on top, and an additional 'mid fluffer' to the left of the tone knob. The flat lever switches feel awesome. Sounds amazing on its own, but really comes alive with just a tiny boost in front.

Here you can see the mods peeking out. The tone mod subs in a much lower value cap for C11 (22nF). I used spare 8 pin sockets to allow trying different components.

Here you can just barely see the clipping diodes/leds crammed in below the pcb.

Here's a quick and dirty sound test. Signal path is my Kiesel Leia w/ Lollar alnico pole p90's (neck pickup, volume and tone at full) > Bogner Harlow compressor > Dream Fuzz > Kemper profiler with Tone Junkie's 'Spanky' profile. Distorted parts are double tracked and hard panned, but no changes are made to the signal path except stomping the switch on the Dream Fuzz. Both mods are engaged in this sample, so leds are being used for clipping and C11 is 22nF. The led clipping is interesting. They're much edgier and louder when the volume and sustain knobs are set lower, and make less of a difference as they get higher. Overall I think I actually prefer them over the 1N4148 diodes.

So far I love this pedal! I might also try out some additional clipping options to get a feel for what different things sound like. Still learning a ton - honestly kinda surprised it worked out so well! :ROFLMAO:

I’ve built many BMP variants…with many still to come. However, the OpAmp Muff is the one that’s always on my board. That is an impressive build. Well done.

Looks fantastic! I’ll have to check out that sound demo later too. Did you have any trouble fitting the toggle switch under the PCB without it shorting against the PCB? Looks like a tight fit!

Yeah, it's a pretty tight fit - you can solder the pots and switches way up on their 'tippytoes' and then bend the lugs on the switches to get clearance (I've done it a few times with other PedalPCB boards). Also helps to tape up the underside of the pcb to make sure there's no contact in case of squeezing.

Actually, @PedalPCB - I think it could be really fun to offer a few frequently modded pcbs with some prototyping space on the side, like Adafruit does with some of their boards like this one:

Probably not a new idea, but it would be cool!

Many thanks! This is actually the first BMP I've played through, but I'm definitely addicted. Curious to hear if there are any other standouts from the family in your experience.
