Ebay Buying

I am sourcing part for a Nobles OD1 from Aion and there is one item that's a bit elusive. I've seen advice about avoiding eBay but is that for everything?
The part is a 2n5457 transistor. I see this listing:

Does it look ok?

You could spend $6 and find out. Not a bad price if you get 5 good t2n5457s, and not a big loss if they are not genuine. Seller has a pretty good rating but less than 10K sales.

True. And how would one know that they are not genuine?

One side question to this pedal.

The 2N5457 is a substitute for a BC264D that is used in the original. Also a 2N5088 I used in place of the original 2SC2362G. Do these substitutes have any audible change in the effect?

Socket them if possible and you can audition as needed. I've become used to using SMD parts lately just because unless you buy from Smallbear or other reputable sources it's a crap shoot. Not to say that everything out there is bad but with SMD it's a virtual guarantee. Trade off is...it's SMD. That said, once you get used to soldering the little buggers, there's no looking back.

I have old guy eyesight but to be honest the key to SMD is being able to see it. I use a magnifying light on a gooseneck, but I think you need that regardless of eyesight. Good clean solder-work is easier if you can see it. Small diameter solder helps me too. Less chance of it blabbing up on your iron.

I ordered some a month ago and they were fake. It was from the same source. Cheaper to get the surface mount ones and the SOT23 adaptors, or buy through hole ones from guitarpcb, $2 ea though.
Did you file for a refund and leave negative feedback for the seller? It's a good practice to use for ebay sales.

You have to test them. Measure Vp & Idss. Buying any semiconductors on eBay is high risk. JFETs even more so. Ask the seller if they test the parts they sell.

+1 shipping is reasonable there so total (for one) is about $5 but it's a pretty safe bet it's genuine. I think that pedal only needs one 2n5457
So I just received my through hole 2N5457’s from guitarpcb, and I also have the smd ones that I bought from Tayda. When I put them in my tester the smd reads “NJFET“ and the through hole transistor in it reads “NPN“.
Anyone know what the deal is with that? The ebay rip offs gave me the same “NPN” reading when I tested them.

I have one of those cheap testers

Which tester? This one? I've had issues with it recognizing J201s that I know (from Mouser long ago) were real
Edit: I just used it to check some 2N5457 ones that I got from Mouser and it shows up as NJFET
