I have been cleaning up hard drives and doing some winter time cleaning finding old cds and folders of old favorites and becoming inspired all over again.

Hearing songs as I age kind of take on different meanings and songs I would have disregarded in my youth have become favorites.

I thought it would be interesting for all of us to share some of our favorite lyrics that stick out to us for one reason or another.

This week for me is Tool “right in two”

Faith is an interesting thing to me and I love the lyric content in this song, especially the lines;

Repugnant is a creature who would squander the ability
To lift an eye to heaven, conscious of his fleeting time here

So my fellow pedal nerds give me what you got!

I love the lyrics these guys come up with... and the guitarist are just crazy good.definitely one of my top ten albums

“Without a word uttered
A comparison is drawn.
A distant future, a cluttered past
Amid the stars.
Vague and persistent,
Thought lacking consistency.
Unwilling victim of farce.
The loudest voices scream uninspired.
Their numbers vast, their spirits drowned.
Quiet choices sing against the choir
The majority is almost never wrong...
Never wrong... Ever... Never wrong.”

For me a lot of there lyrics speak to how we are just hypocritical beings and it’s a tough pill to swallow.

I get a little taste of you
I get a little taste of you
I get a little taste of you
I get a little taste
I suck a little face
Smear a little paste on you

Z-Rock Hawaii - Get a Little Taste of You.

Because acid is a hell of a drug.
Any chance you shared that because Ween played that tonight like 10 minutes ago?

Pretty much anything from DC Berman, really, but Trains Across the Sea is maybe my favorite of his.

Yeah, he's a goldmine of lyrics. I've always liked this line (one of his more obvious lines, but always makes me laugh):

People ask people to watch their scotch.
People send people up to the moon.
When they return, well there isn't much.

Yeah, he's a goldmine of lyrics. I've always liked this line (one of his more obvious lines, but always makes me laugh):

People ask people to watch their scotch.
People send people up to the moon.
When they return, well there isn't much.
People be careful not to crest to sooooon

You can't change the feeling but you can change the feeling about the feeling in a second or two, uh huh, people always come around.

Sorry, I had to finish the melody in my head 😂

Yeah, People is one of my favorites from him as well. There's just so much good stuff to choose from. I really wish he chose to stick around.

And my traveling companions are ghosts and empty sockets
I'm looking at ghosts and empties
But I've reason to believe
We all will be received in Graceland

There is a girl in New York City
Who calls herself the human trampoline
And sometimes when I'm falling, flying
Or tumbling in turmoil I say
"Whoa, so this is what she means"
She means we're bouncing into Graceland

And I see losing love
Is like a window in your heart
Well, everybody sees you're blown apart
Everybody feels the wind blow

- Paul Simon

Also, here's a fun fact. We all know Mozart was a child prodigy who grew up to be what we would consider to be "rock star" status. It's kind of like he was simultaneously the McCartney, the Jackson 5, and the Hendrix of his time.

Less known is his fondness for scatology and rewriting popular song lyrics like a German Weird Al Yankovic.

Although completely depressing I love Ian Curtis lyrics the man was an absolute poet Shadowplay and New Dawn Fades being favourites of mine

A change of speed, a change of style
A change of scene, with no regrets
A chance to watch, admire the distance
Still occupied, though you forget
Different colors, different shades
Over each mistakes were made
I took the blame
Directionless, so plain to see
A loaded gun won't set you free
So you say

Bob Marley being another master hard to pick just a few everything he wrote put you in the picture and made you think

Others I love just because they're not predictable and don't use rhyme just coz it rhymes are Kurt Cobain and Black Francis and of course Jim Morrison with them all you knew exactly how they were feeling, what they were trying to get across and you could relate everything to times in your own life

By the same token I also like daft lyrics and lyrics that say the same thing in different ways

I love the Ramones I mean

I don't wanna be a pinhead no more I just met a nurse that I could go for

Or Wire this is from a song called Brazil which has nothing to do with Brazil

It's true, darling, I'll walk you home
I'll be your date forever
I love you girl, yes, I love you
Until they split the atom

So many times, there's nothing left
There's nothing left at all
I know I'm right, 'cause when you're gone
There's nothing left at all

Left, right, left, right, left, right, left, right
Left, right, left, right, halt
Salute

My favorite songwriter is by far Tom Waits. He creates strange, sometimes spooky, sometimes sweet and always human murals in his words.

I love his album Rain Dogs and it was the first one I really got into back in college.

"Time"

Well the smart money's on Harlow
And the moon is in the street
The shadow boys are breaking all the laws
And you're east of East St. Louis
And the wind is making speeches
And the rain sounds like a round of applause
Napoleon is weeping in the Carnival saloon
His invisible fiance is in the mirror
The band is going home
It's raining hammers, it's raining nails
Yes, it's true, there's nothin' left for him down here

And it's Time Time Time
And it's Time Time Time
And it's Time Time Time
That you love
And it's Time Time Time

And they all pretend they're Orphans
And their memory's like a train
You can see it getting smaller as it pulls away
And the things you can't remember
Tell the things you can't forget that
History puts a saint in every dream

Well she said she'd stick around
Until the bandages came off
But these mamas boys just don't know when to quit
And Matilda asks the sailors are those dreams
Or are those prayers?'
So just close your eyes, son
And this won't hurt a bit

And it's Time Time Time
And it's Time Time Time
And it's Time Time Time
That you love
And it's Time Time Time

Well, things are pretty lousy for a calendar girl
The boys just dive right off the cars
And splash into the street
And when she's on a roll she pulls a razor
From her boot and a thousand
Pigeons fall around her feet
So put a candle in the window
And a kiss upon his lips
Till the dish outside the window fills with rain
Just like a stranger with the weeds in your heart
And pay the fiddler off till I come back again

Oh, it's time, time, time
And it's time, time, time

And it's Time Time Time
And it's Time Time Time
And it's Time Time Time
That you love
And it's Time Time Time

"Singapore"

"Singapore"

We sail tonight for Singapore
We're all as mad as hatters here
I've fallen for a tawny moor
took off to the Land of Nod
Drank with all the Chinamen
Walked the sewers of Paris
I danced along a colored wind
Dangled from a rope of sand
You must say goodbye to me

We sail tonight for Singapore
Don't fall asleep while you're ashore
Cross your heart and hope to die
When you hear the children cry
Let marrow bone and cleaver choose
While making feet for children's shoes
Through the alley
Back from Hell
When you hear that steeple bell
You must say goodbye to me

Wipe him down with gasoline
Till his arms are hard and mean
From now on boys this iron boat's your home
So heave away boys

We sail tonight for Singapore
Take your blankets from the floor
Wash your mouth out by the door
The whole town is made of iron ore
Every witness turns to steam
They all become Italian dreams
Fill your pockets up with earth
Get yourself a dollar's worth
Away boys, away boys, heave away

The captain is a one-armed dwarf
He's throwing dice along the wharf
In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is King
So take this ring

We sail tonight for Singapore
We're all as mad as hatters here
I've fallen for a tawny moor
took off to the Land of Nod
Drank with all the Chinamen
Walked the sewers of Paris
I danced along a colored wind
Dangled from a rope of sand
You must say goodbye to me

That's just the tip of the iceberg. Mule Variations, Swordfishtrombones and his 3-part Orphans releases are amazing.
