Font talk

A few EHX pedals have been discussed in the whatthefont forum. Usually it's determined that they started with an off-the-shelf font and made some tasteful changes. They probably used knives and tape. It's a little easier with Illustrator (and to a lesser degree Inkscape), with preferably a little pre-font-geek-out.

I've read similar threads but I have yet to identify any typefaces EHX used that were not 95% off the shelf. We might be talking about different types of threads but I've seen people say exactly that about the memory man type even though its just set in VGC's Barry with no customizations.

I've been on a quest for the perfect 60-70s technical/NASA font. Still having trouble finding free/opensource versions. Interesting info here

Of the ones listed in "Acceptable type styles" which are you been unable to find free versions of? Happy to track some down, I believe there's free (without piracy) versions of each listed. Also for what it's worth I believe Mid-Century on that list refers to IBM's typewriter version of Futura.

One thing that doing pedal typeface IDing has really reiterated for me is how many typefaces we've lost that never made it into the digital era. Catching an ID in a Letraset catalogue is fun because I love digging through my old type catalogues but there's always so many, especially the more decorative faces like the ones used in pedal typography during the photo-lettering era, that died out. If the point (and it usually is) of hunting down a pedal's typeface is to incorporate it into other designs, an unusable identification is always a bummer.

Just looking at this I'd say they started with a commercial font, converted it to vector format and added metallic reflection effects. Looks like they made one copy with gold metallic and made that about 15% larger, then centered the original letter shapes back on top to give it a very thick metallic outline. The H was probably manipulated prior to the effects and overlaying.

@Harry Klippton still looking for the "ero'sQuest" font.

Have you tried here? http://forum.yeoldeinn.com/index.php
I didn't know Hero'sQuest had such a bit community.
That's a different game. Hero quest (hero is not possessive in that title) was a tabletop game made by Milton Bradley that came out in the same year as Hero's Quest. The PC game that I attached above had to change its name to Quest for Glory 1 shortly thereafter, and without the cool visual styling. I still have the original game with the box art I posted in the OP

Does anyone know these fonts? The second one is basically Futura, the first one eludes me. Must be some Letraset typeface from back in the day.
I tried the above tool and came up empty. I asked Ant Macari on Youtube and crickets.

Howard Trafton's Cartoon Light for Bauer. Called Fresko in German markets. Traftoon is a digital revival and as far as I’m aware the only digitized lighter weight

Here are some font (they’re really typefaces but for the sake of brevity I’m just going to call them fonts here) resources that I use for identification / inspiration for what it's worth
  • identifont.com non automatic identification, usually my last resort, but is great for finding fonts similar to each other and comparing fonts to each other
  • whatfontis.com usually my first try for auto id. a lot of the results include non authorized duplicates of famous fonts, so I’ll usually sort results by price high to low or use in conjunction with identifont’s similarity tool to nail down the real font
  • fontsinuse.com the closest thing there is to a wikipedia for fonts. lots of information and inspiration. the “similar fonts” section on a page for a specific font isn’t always as useful as identifont’s tool (identifonts is based on visual similarity, fontsinuse's is based on visual + style + foundry + designer) but is more than enough for random browsing. the site's bibliography is also really handy.
  • e-daylight.jp/fonts/ daylight font’s information section. one of the best niche resources I’ve ever stumbled across - lots of specimens from the photo lettering era. I believe I’m the first person online to ID at least 2 EHX pedals thought to be custom typography as off the wall just from daylight alone (Deluxe Memory Man as VGC Barry and Electric Mistress as Mecanorma's Raflo)

I LOVE the last two links!

Great resources! I didn't know there were so many font resources.

I *should* be able to recognize this font, but it eludes me... The 'G's, 'E's, and 'P' should be the quickest giveaway, but I can't put my finger on it. I've just been scrolling thru all of my fonts, but I have way too many, so after a half hour of searching I'm only just approaching fonts that start with the letter C...

Edit: The AI font identifier site came thru for once. It's Septimus or Quadrata. Luckily I have Quadrata, so....
