It's apparently some fancy engineer thermal deal, but really it just looks cool like cross hatch ground planes.

Ah, yeah the cross hatch planes are something my boss at my old job always made fun of. He said something to the effect of "99% of the time you don't need it, and the other 1% of the time there's a better way to get the same result."

I just think it looks cool and I’m sure it adds no real value. I wouldn’t do it if it was more than a couple mouse clicks.

I've been designing PCBs for 8 years including professionally for 6 years and I had no idea teardrops on pads was a thing until today. Have I been doing it wrong this whole time?

It allows all that mojo to flow through nice and smoothly.
