I've built a few elka dizzy tones now, the first on a ppcb gnat board, and it's become an absolute favorite. This piqued my interest in the actual buzzaround so I picked this up as well as another gnat to build a stock pnp version in the near future. This one was smooth sailing outside of a few minor blunders of my own making. I did audition q3 and the diode but almost everything I plugged in to the sockets seemed to work. I went with an mp38a and a big ol 1N119.
The first blunder was finding out how fragile tropical fish caps are via bending the leads... there's a single wima film cap under the volume pot as a result. I used long pin pots and installed them on the component side so all the bits are visible through the little plastic window my buddy 3D printed for me. I bought all sorts of mojo parts that are not my usual fare. I decided to remove the sockets because sockets cancel out the mojo. I ended up destroying a pad on q3 so I had to use a little bodge wire to get it working again.
Sound-wise, I love this thing. Yet another vintage fuzz that I'll never use on bass but it sounds really good with my telecaster. With the extra gain stage it can get crazy loud. It's funny, I rarely touch the volume on my basses but I'm just drawn to these fuzzes that respond beautifully to a little volume roll off with guitar. Though they don't really sound all that similar, it thins out in a pleasant way as it cleans up like the harmonic percolator I built recently.
