What are the other virtues, besides cheaper manufacturing? I am genuinely curious. I get how it’s quicker and cheaper, but what else is there besides that?

According to Josh (for what that’s worth), it results in a quieter circuit and of course, being able to cram more circuit in smaller space. Meh.

IIRC the Cornerstone guy said something similar re: SMD. My guess is that the real reason is just ease of robotic manufacturing though.

Honestly though, many of the builds here look way nicer than anything mass produced. I’m continually in awe of the build reports y’all post.

I agree, people who do this as a hobby just put more love into it. I bet the builds that look a little crude would benefit greatly from just a better soldering iron.
