since the og univox super-fuzz circuit absolutely kicks arse, i expected no less from this Boss evolution of the mighty octave fuzz.
especially given how much praise this thing seems to cop here and all over the rest of the world.

Looking at previous build examples I decided to include the 'secret mode' mod on a toggle. mostly just to see how it goes.

absolutely chuffed with this new 'metallic candy clear' from tayda.

i read from some other builders that the choice of IC in some spots can make a fairly noticeable difference.
i had my doubts, but decided that perhaps it might be worth leaving IC2 on a socket so i could compare a few.

- first tried a 'new' JRC4558D pulled from a socketed overdrive build.
- then an old JRC4558DD from an old/unk boss pedal (someone gave a whole heap of old pulled JRC4558DDs that i've not seen before, has a dark, black satin sheen unlike new production examples)
- and then this RM4558T tin can thing i bought years ago on ebay.

honestly, really not that much difference.
if anything, the new one sounded the most harsh, the old one was very similar, and the RM4558T had a slightly noticeable pleasant smoothness to it that the others didn't (probably from a more limited bandwidth, i would assume).

here's a basic powerchord/caveman demo that shows the 3 modes.

imo, the 'secret mode' is so close to flat mid mode, i'm not sure it's worth getting that excited about, but it's there.
perhaps if there was a simple way to dial down the flat mid mode and bring in more of the mid scoop mode, it'd probably be more worthwhile.

Sweet. You can mess with R25 to bump up the volume of scooped mode. I like 330K, 270k will give you the same output as the other mode but because it's so scooped 330K brings up the perceived volume a good bit. Mess around with it!
heck yeah, thanks for the tip.
with R25 at 120K, bumping it up to 330 or 270K sounds like it'd be quite a lift.
